I'm on 4th XBOX360 in two years...

I know this is an old issue, but it is a bit ridiculous. Everyone I know who has a 360 has had to replace/reapir it at least once. My neighbor is on his 3rd, I just had to send mine in because of a faulty disc drive. Second time for that repair, the other was for the red rings. I just have so many games for the 360, it would be a waste to throw in the towel, plus a PS3 is still a bit pricey to think of right now.

Has there ever been a major piece of hardware like this with a similar fail rate? I certainly can't think of anything.

You reminded me of that funny scene.

By the way, Microsoft customer service is IMPOSSIBLE to get through in a timely fashion. You can't hit "O" at any time to shut up the goddamn "Max" character who guides you through the process. Then I get to "Tina" from Bengal, India. Who I can hardly understand. They also wanted to charge me a hundo to fix the damn thing which I just got back from them in April. They reduced it to 50, but still.

If I hadn't just got Fallout 3...but dammit I wanna play that game!

My friend has his broke so his next 360 will be his 4th since 2005 launch but his current one lasted for 2 years so his next one will be the new baches that has fixes in place to stop RROD assuming you treat your 360 right of course.

Am looking to offload mine next year to buy 60 Gb HDD with all the fixes, mine is 2 years old and had no real problems with it apart from lousy disc drive reader Microsoft uses.

I'm on my second 360, though it was a want and not a need (it's an Elite with HDMI). My first one died recently from the red ring of death but it did get fixed under the warranty. I guess I'm lucky in that it was a first gen non-HDMI 360 and lasted me this long without redding out.

I'm on my third 360. Which is pretty crazy when you think about it. The failure rate really was absurd on those early models.

Thats weird. Im on my first. Ive had mine since about 6 months after the were released. But then I have mine modded. And I have like 50-60 games. Maybe thats why mine hasnt died yet...Nah. I just treat mine with care...lol

It really is puzzling how some people can still be on their launch unit while others have had numerous replacements. I really honestly believe I also treated mine "with care" but it still RROD'd. So I don't think that's necessarily the answer.

I treated both of mine unit's with a great deal of care. I'm a huge neat freak, so I always kept them dusted and in areas that are well ventilated. Both still died.

Mine started freezing during Gears 2... but only in the menus. I have no idea if that's Gears or my system though... but that happened when my system died during my Mass Effect adventures.

Damn thing better not die... I'd just be rightly pissed. :p

This is why I am so nervous about getting a 360. I want one but It will break my wallet to dish out for a new one every couple years. I still have my original xbox and she still runs strong. why couldn't they build them like that, if they did I would have got one a long time ago.

I did have a occasional pausing or freezing during gears of war 1. Kinda when it was going from one area to the other. Which I think is when its loading the next area. Not the cut scenes. But thats the only thing Ive ever had on my 360. And I dont know if it was the game or my system but Ive never had any red ring of any kind and yeah mine is close to 2 years old. Then again I only play mine 1-2 times a week...

Gears 2 on insane mode has me wanting to smash my 360, but that's different :p

Got mine in November 06. It died in September 07, but it wasn't the RRoD - it was a GPU failure. Also, the thing had a tendency to scratch my discs to bits.

I sent it away to be fixed and they sent me the same one back. It's been fine ever since and no longer scratches my discs. Still, I know it'll die someday. I'm prepared for it :)

Yeah, treating it with care or whatever isn't going to make a difference. When my 360 died a friend of mine said that his would never die because he "took care of it" better then I did... a few months later, his died. I laughed. Either the solder points will fail, or they won't. There's not much you can do to prevent it short of never turning the 360 on. :p

If it's the heat that's making the solder "melt" or whatever, I suppose putting it into a freezer would help it.

Well the problem isn't the solder melting... the problem is the board warping (which is a combination of heat stress and the physical stress by they're crazy heatsink clamp) which causes the solder points to pop out. That's why the towel trick works as a temporary fix... it heats up the 360 enough so that the solder points melt slightly and reconnect for a bit, until the board warps a little more and they pop out again.

The temperatures you'd need to keep it at to keep that from happening would probably cause other parts to fail :p

Far as I know the new Elites & 60GB HDD failure rates have dropped to the levels consider the norm and on par or close to those of PS3 in that case I would assume.
