I'm going to Portland

I'm going to go visit my little sister in Portland. What sites should I see? And what are some good restaurants? And, since I'm taking my Mother, what are some good places to have family friendly fun?

Maine or Oregon?

Both are pretty sweet.

Agreed. I love them both. Grew up in Oregon; travel to Portland, ME frequently these days. Happy to lend a hand, but need to know which one you'll be visiting. Given your geographical location, I suspect it's the Rose City. ;)

p.s. -- SmoothieX, yet something else we have in common? We're starting to frighten me just a little bit. :p

Separated at birth perhaps!

I don't know which one they are talking about. From Texas its anyone's guess which is closer.

I only went to the Oregon one once. The highlight was eating at an awesome Ethiopian joint there. We walked around the downtown a lot, and compared to the old cities of the northeast, you could practically eat off the sidewalks it was so clean.

The drive along I-84 along the Columbia River is gorgeous.

The one in Maine is fun too, I've been there a few times. Have a lobster and a pint of Sea Dog Ale, then take in the Sea Dogs (Red Sox minor leaguers) baseball team.

That's what I'm starting to think.

LOL! Only, it just occurred to me that, given our apparent age difference, that would be quite a feat; maybe a Trekian Temporal anomaly was involved. :vulcan:

True dat. There are some really great restaurants in Portland these days, and it is one of the cleanest cities. And, as I commented in another thread not too long ago, the drivers are SO polite!

 Pun intended? ;)

One of the highlights for me, as an Oregon State Alum, was getting to see Jacoby Ellsbury play in Portland when we was a Sea Dog, not too terribly long before he was called up to the bigs. :techman:

And, if you haven't ever eaten at Fore Street, I highly recommend it. Lots of other good restaurants in the Olde Port area, as well, but Fore Street (and their somewhat more upscale sister restaurant, Street and Company) is one of the best, IMHO.

Oregon is better because I'm here. Not in Portland proper mind you, but close enough.

Well, who can argue with that? :p

I still wanna get you, me and Gibraltar together sometime when I'm out for a visit.

Perhaps one of those self fulfilling temporal paradoxes set into motion when George Lucas changed Star Wars so Greedo shot first. The kind that only make sense after sniffing a lot of glue.

Or when doing field work around suburban Boston all day when it's 9000% humidity. Someone smells like armpits!

:guffaw:

Seriously, my Admin just poked her head into my office to see what I was laughing about.

And, yeah, welcome to Boston in August, where you need a knife to cut your way through the air. :bolian:

My bad, I forgot there was a Portland, ME. I'll be going to Portland, OR.

Such is the glorious life of an engineer. We're doing a redundancy study of redundancy on several key water mains leading into the Boston area. They want to install parallel mains in the event one of the 75 year old lines (constructed of hollowed out dinosaur bones I believe) screws the pooch.

It involves driving along these really busy roads and attempting to take pictures and notes and find places to stop while some impatient clownpuncher behind you gets up your tailpipe and lays on the horn.

The shit I do so you can have running water. Ingrate! :p

First, I have to say that I LOVE that term: Clownpuncher. Never heard it before, but it's SO very evocative of Boston drivers. May I use it? Oh, and btw, you'd better "TM" that one right quick.

Second, believe it or not, some of us in Boston metro really DO understand and appreciate what folks like you do for us. Tell ya what, next time you have a day like this, give me a shout and I'll buy ya a cold frosty one on behalf of the drinking water consumers of Boston. Okay, I'll buy ya two. :p
