I'm goin' to Vegas, baby!

I've seen the inside of the airport and the rental car counter, that's about it. Then we high tailed it out of town. Had no interest in Vegas, but it was a great place to fly into to see the Desert Southwest.

Zion and Death Valley Netional Parks are 3 hours away from LV, albeit in opposite directions. I saw Death Valley.

I also made a point to see the Hoover Dam, which is 90 miles away. Being a civil engineer, it was mandatory.
That's what I did. I went to the Grand Canyon by way of Vegas because it was so cheap. But I did stay overnight just to look around and have the Vegas experience. No luck with seeing Dan Tanna, though.

Thanks, all. And thanks, EiffelLyle. We had a wonderful dinner there years ago and are seriously considering eating there again, or at the Bistro downstairs, this trip.

I don't really understand the appeal of Vegas. On TV it's depicted as loud, flashy, and hot. In short, it sounds obnoxious.
All true, I think. But: a couple weeks ago it was like 50 during the day. :)
You ought to go there, though - at least once if only to witness this surreal and hyper-massive train-wreck of a most famous city in the world. And you could take a heli and have some cheap sparkling wine at the bottom of the Grand Canyon.-

I actually have been to the Grand Canyon. Stopped off there by way of Amtrak a few years ago. Didn't realize it was that close to Vegas.

Are you sure you saw the right dam? The Hoover Dam is just a bit over 30 miles away from Las Vegas (just confirmed it on Google Maps too in the likely event I'm senile). :p

Must have had my architectural instead of my engineering scale that day.

Well, it's quite a drive across the desert. I forget how long it took-- an hour or two.

According to the weatherman, rain is expected next Wednesday. I wonder if it'll be flashflood time again.

Oh, and the first time I was ever in a real snowfall--pretty soft snow falling and all?--Vegas. Enough snow so that I couldn't see the green paint on my car.
