IGN Interview with Roberto Orci

They don't need to. This last film established that this is their own thing and they will continue to build on that.

That is my hope and if they do that I will be happy.

I do love the new movie by the way..it is my favorite Trek movie.

Just wondering, if Romulus was destroyed by the super-nova then we can assume Remus is gone too. Just how an large volume do you think was destroyed? After all, the shell of the explosion would extend in 3 dimensions. Would it have extended across the neutral zone or into Klingon space?

Star Trek Online allows as part of its story premise that Remus was destroyed along with Romulus. ("On the other side of the Quadrant, the Romulans now want revenge for the loss of both Romulus and Remus.") Whether the full extent of the destruction caused by the Superdupernova is also stated is something I don't know, but someone here might.

I'm torn because I don't really want a Khan rehash, but when I look at Nestor Carbonell's face, I wonder if God made him for the sole purpose of being this generation's Khan (and if I were God, I would totally do things like that).

I am a bit ambivalent about Khan being in the next movie. I really don't think he needs to be, but if he is and they do it well I will be alright with that.

I wouldn't mind if in the next movie they settled the debate to whether or not the recent movie was a total reboot or an alternate universe was created.

Honestly, I wouldn't waste time on that.
Orci and Kurtzman won't either.

As long as it ends with Kirk beating Khan half to death with a PVC pipe, I'll be happy.

It is an interesting interview. I still hope they go into new territory rather than a remake of a previous story.

The Enterprise encounters the Botany Bay and blows it up as a hazard to navigation while on it's way to do something NEW!

Great idea but technically the Enterprise and crew of this Universe are not obliged even to be heading in the same direction as it did in TOS.

We don't even know for sure a "5 year mission" will occur here.

That's sort of my point. If they did encounter the Botany Bay they shouldn't be the ones to encounter Khan. Let someone else deal with him this time. It's all new. Let's see Kirk be more of a hellraiser than he was before. Let's see Spock go in a totally different direction that Prime Spock. It's not supposed to be a remake of TOS.

I'd also like something new but I hope it's the type that makes us actually care instead of something that seems to exist in a vacuum. The Baku were also new.

I see two types of new that works: 1) New that adds something useful, 2) A new perspective on or fleshing out of something old.
