If you were the Captain of an Enterprise

shawn12

Lieutenant
Red Shirt
If you were the Captain of an Enterprise in space above the earth right now, what things would you do first to help humankind?

None, because I'd be breaking the prime directive if I were to interfere in the past.

To do anything would cause a breech in both the prime directive and the temporal prime directive.

I wouldn't be above Earth. I'd be exploring strange new worlds and teaching green Orion women about love.

I know what the prime directive is, but what is the temporal prime directive?

You wouldn't be interfering in the past. It would be now and in the present. Say, the ship didn't come from the future, although maybe I should have made that clearer.

So Bill, you wouldn't help the earth in anyway? Green Orion women and not the women from the planet spandex? LOL

I am not sure. Probably the whole "Boldly Going where no one has gone before" thing. Serious, who doesn't want to see other planets?

I am with taking her out to explore the universe for sure. I imagine doing that all the time. Not much could be cooler then that for me personally.

But what about helping earth and the problems we have now. They have broken the prime directive on a few occasions.

Lets take the prime directive out of the question for the moment.

But for humanity to be able to build FTL starships the problems of today probably wouldn't exist within that society. So it's either another culture that has built the starship (which means the Prime Directive applies if dealing with Earth) or it would have to be a future Earth society (which means you can't fudge around with Earth of today or you risk changing that future society).

So I'd do nothing... allowing nature to take its course. Bring on the green Orion women!

LOL, Its just a hypothetical question.

Okay, your the captain of the Enterprise, but not a star fleet officer.

"The Prime Directive is a Starfleet regulation, and thus only applies to Starfleet officers. Civilian citizens of the Federation are not bound by it. In fact, if a Federation citizen has chosen to personally interfere with another civilization, Starfleet is powerless to remove that individual, under penalty of court-martial."

It's been a while since I saw the episode, but I guess you'd be whatever the hell those Federation guys stranded on the planet in TNG's Angel One were. It was from them we learn that the Prime Directive only applies to Starfleet officers and that no one else in the Federation has to follow it.

Which I found odd. Considering how serious Starfleet considers it (a cpatain is expected to sacrifice their ship and crew to uphold it) you'd think the Federation would expect all its spacefaring agencies, be they Starfleet, civilian freighters, or transport services, to follow it. Clearly not.

A better question might be: if you had knowledge of 23rd century technology and were stranded on 20th century Earth, would you help and if so, what would you do?

If you were the Captain of an Enterprise in space above the earth right now, what things would you do first to help humankind?

Nothing. There is no pressing reason to intervene and sharing your tech with a backward planet like ours would cause a massive disruption of the local economy. Best just to check in from time to time until they are ready to join the galactic community (by inventing warp drive).

If I was the captain of the Enterprise, I'd wonder what the fuck we're doing in orbit of Earth and give the order to take us out.

I'd be as far from Earth as I could get, especially prior to WW3 & during Q's depiction of it's immediate aftermath.

In the meantime, I'd use shuttles or workbees to nudge the Botany Bay back to Earth's orbit, beam engineers aboard, remove or trim the capacity of the Botany Bay's life support so it can't last longer than the trip home.

Redirect the Botany Bay's guidance systems to somehow bring it home and use its few automated systems to jettison the cargo units holding the personnel so they land on water on Earth.

Locate landing spots in the "escape pod" library computer systems ~just~ close enough to "friendly" / appropriate authorities' territory that Khan will be easily located during re-entry, captured and brought to justice.

Otherwise, quietly slink away from Earth-friendly territory and lay-low in "grey mode" or using a 'borrowed' Romulan or Klingon cloaking device. Drift far enough away that you can engage impulse and not get picked-up by the Vulcans or their allies.

Find a surplus yard, strip the Enterprise down and convert three or four civilian freighters with the salvaged parts you didn't trade/sell outright, torpedo/self-destruct the rest as you shouldn't leave anything behind that can fall into inappropriate hands.

Attempt to keep the crew's mouths shut about Humans and the location of Earth. Find an unwitting planet to host a few "alien" shipping companies and a colony out of the way of future-history.

If my assignment was Earth, and I'm assuming you as head of Starfleet are assigning me this planet as opposed to a quadrant the first things I would do is:

1. Get Dr. McCoy to come down and show the earth doctors how to cure the major diseases of our time such as cancer, Parkinson's, heart disease, Alzheimer's, so no one ever loses a loved one, a parent or a child to illness.

2. Get Engineering to get onto making emergency replicators to major areas of poverty and begin to feed the hungry.

3. Get Weapons Control to disable all earth weapons with magnetic pulses so there will be no more killing.

4. Environmental Staff to assess the physical condtion of planet Earth and ask them to repair and replenish any damaged systems.

5. Get Spock down there to organize a meeting of world leaders and teach them some logic.

6. Lock photon torpedos on and blow up Fox News.

Yet McCoy lost his father to an illness...

How would they keep the governments and local businesses from misusing the technology?

3. Get Weapons Control to disable all earth weapons with magnetic pulses so there will be no more killing.
wide spread panic as a result

4. Environmental Staff to assess the physical condtion of planet Earth and ask them to repair and replenish any damaged systems.
How? Not without major upheval of the intrafracture and the economy. Plus I don't think even a single galaxy class starship would be able to do all that.

5. Get Spock down there to organize a meeting of world leaders and teach them some logic.
Spock wouldn't be quick to go down. He'd find it illogical to try it.

6. Lock photon torpedos on and blow up Fox News.
Good idea
