If you used the "Discovery" people to field a baseball team!

I know this is the question that has been on all of are minds since day 1 and even pre-dates the canon, klingon and black badges, questions. If you had to field a baseball team with this lot how would you do it? Here is how I think it would shake out.

Saru,Ash Tyler,Burnham,Sarek and Lorca are most likely your best athletes. Saru I think would be a perfect fit as a centerfielder with his running speed. He can cover lots of ground and he will need it because the corner outfielders are most likely not going to be very good but I will get to them later. Next up is your next best athlete I suspect is Burnham or Tyler. One has Vulcan training and the other has hidden Klingon DNA. Best place is for Burnham to take Shortstop and Tyler to take 2nd base which also helps when it comes to turning a double play since they already love each other thus giving them good chemistry, which is something you need out of your middle infielders.

Next up Sarek and I suspect with Vulcan's being very strong he will have a powerful pitching arm so you want him to be pitcher and also a Vulcan most likely have the endurance to go beyond any silly pitch count a human pitcher might have to deal with. Lorca strikes me as a perfect power hitting 1st baseman but here is were we have to make our first real compromise. If you put him there you don't got a good enough athlete elsewhere to handle 3rd base so you have to put him at third. As for catcher you go with the robot in Airiam. A robot isn't going to get tired being crouched down all game plus a Vulcan and Robot are most likely going to have a good chemistry and a Pitcher and catcher always work best when they are on the same page when it comes to coming up with which kind of pitch you want and so forth.

Now we get to the real sacrifice which means you basically got to hide people you expect will be bad a defense and hope the ball doesn't find them that much. Most likely places to hide those kinds of players are the corner outfield spots and first base and DH but I am not using the DH for my team. First base goes to Harry Mudd. He strikes me as being to out of shape for outfield and he is smart since he seemed to figure out the Discovery computers way to easily so I figure he can learn how to play first base just well enough to be passable, just don't expect him to be a gold glover.

Next you fill your LF and RF positions with Tilly and Stamets. Tilly might be a okay athlete because she is a starfleet officer but she doesn't strike me as someone with lots of strength for power which is also something you also expect from corner outfielders. Stamets I got to think would be the worst. He doesn't strike me as being fast or strong and then you got him phasing in and out with his mirror universe dopplengander so he isn't even going to have much focus either.

I don't know enough about Detmer,Rhys,Owosekun or Dr Culber to know were they would fit so they basically go to the bench. Your manger of course is Admiral Cornwell. She seems to have good leadership skills for the most part. Sure she might have dropped the ball on not removing Lorca from command but then again Dave Roberts of the Dodger overused his bullpen in the playoffs which is one of the reasons they most likely didn't win the world series so it's basically the same thing. We saw that she is good at yelling which can come in handy when she needs to chew the team out for loafing instead being focused on their jobs.

Here is my projected batting order:

1 Saru
2 Tyler
3 Burnham
4 Lorca
5 Sarek(I know it's not traditional to bat the pitcher this high but it's a Vulcan and thus you think he will a great hitter as well.)
6Airam
7Tilly
8Mudd
9 Stamets.

The team name has got to be the , Disco Blackbadges. Complete with hats with the blackbadge image on the baseball cap and on the uniforms. Team colors are blue of course with the lettering and numbers coming in that silver look that denotes what field a person is in on the ship.

Now that they are stranded in the mirror universe, they should use the holodeck to brush up on their fundamentals. Maybe invite their mirror selves to a "friendly" game.

Sarek's out, but L'rell is around to help with research into the opposing team's tactics.

They should all have badges with a baseball symbol on it. Just change the science symbol slightly.

a baseball team of dramatic backstabbers and varied psychosis....

I'm thinkin no matter how you tool it, they suck at baseball.

"Lieutenant Tyler, stop signaling the other team! Specialist Burnham, now's not the time to study the dandelions!"

They're worse than my old little league team.

"Lieutenant Tyler, stop signaling the other team! Specialist Burnham, now's not the time to study the dandelions!"

Burnham: "Captain, the flora in this environment appears to emulate hither-to-forth unknown phenotypes not native to any known Federation world. It is therefore incumbent upon us as explorers and represenatatives of the Federation to study its origins in great detail in order to further our own understanding of what is biologically possible in this universe."

Lorca plays all positions simultaneously and still wins over 100 games, has a ERA below 2.00 with 200 K's and hits .320 with 30 HR and 120 RBI's with 20 stolen bases. Oh yeah...and wins a gold glove.

Boom.

Lorca.

We know Saru can run, but can he hit?

Well he is tall which means he has a big strike zone but I do think he must have good eyes to sort of help stay ahead of prey so I bet he could really see the ball coming, really well and get tons of hits. Not sure about his strength. He looks like someone who would hit more for average more than power but then again he was beating the crap out Burnham and Tyler and crushed that communicator so he might be strong as well so he could be a good HR hitter as well. He would be the perfect relief pitcher as well in case Sarek starts to give up a bunch of hits. Move him to pitcher and switch Sarek to CF since Sarek is also a good athlete I would imagine and also could cover alot of ground, just not as well as Saru.

L'Rell catches, as she's better in a run-down situation. Saru in center for the running speed alone, but the arm's not a cannon so he's gotta hit Tilly at short as his cutoff person. Lorca pitches/manages and, much like Coach Buttermaker said to help the Bad News Bears win, "Let 'em hit you, Ogilvey, so you'll walk." Except he says this to Stamets, who plays right field. Culber in left, of course doubling as team trainer. Airaiam (sp?) at second; she's short like Dustin Pedroia. Tyler at first or DH if American League rules apply. Burnham at second. Mudd at first if AL rules apply. Otherwise, he subs for Stamets in right.

STD people are either riding-the-galactic-pine bench players, or in A ball!

They'll never get in the game!
