If you owned a TV station

Just to show how much of an antique I am, my original idea for the thread was a scenario of an independent television station in some rural area covering local news and interests. But most of the answers are in the form of a cable station. I feel so old.

"Ice Station Zebra."

That would be one of my Saturday Night Features. The very first would be "The Hunt For Red October."

If increasing wealth is your primary goal why did you start a local TV station? Sell it an invest the money in more profitable ventures, then pay a senator to create a law that effectively makes it impossible to compete with you.

But doing that would be off the thread topic, which is "If you owned a TV station..." If I owned a TV station I would want it to make a profit, just like any other business venture I might own, especially if it gave me the opportunity to hand out bonuses and raises to the handful of people necessary to run a station that shows rerun content. I'm not running PBS.

I don't know why the notion of making a profit bothers you and Shaka so much, but, frankly, no one's forcing either of you to go into the station with me. Set up your own and do what you please.

I have no problem with making a profit. Thread hijacking on the other hand...

Yes, if I were running a TV station I would try to make a profit. However, if I couldn't run content I could be proud of, why did I start a TV station in the first place? Why would I enter a dying form of content distribution just to be a bean counter? If I were to enter into this venture, it would be because I thought it would be more fun than other, more lucrative ways to invest my time and money.

Of course if I was really running a TV station I would want it to be profitable, but I would look for ways to make profit that didn't make me feel sleazy. Live events are dying slower than filmed television simply because of the time-sensitive nature of the appeal, particularly sporting events. And just because reality shows are usually trash doesn't mean they have to be. There are hobby-appeal shows like cooking shows and travel shows. Combine hobby-appeal shows with a long term structured contest with drama elements, that's a big buzz creator.

And if you have high quality writing you might not get viewers immediately but you'd get significant trailing profit. And of course I would do focus grouping to see what syndicated shows they want.

Just, if I was ever so desperate that I would run infomercials, I would sell the station and invest in something else. I refuse to contribute to Global Laming.

:wtf::wtf::wtf:

Who hijacked what thread??? I did exactly what the OP asked and stated what syndicated programming I'd put on a station I owned, if I owned one, and even though the premise is I waould be independently wealthy, nowhere in the OP is it expressly stated that i'm not allowed to make the station profitable, so I added my plans for doing so. Then Shaka says "Be WGN! Be TBS" and you admonish me to go bribe a Senator. What did i do wrong?

Did you even look at my first post??? I said I had four great loves, and the majority of the station's programming was based on them!

Why would I enter a dying form of content distribution just to be a bean counter? If I were to enter into this venture, it would be because I thought it would be more fun than other, more lucrative ways to invest my time and money.

Great, but i see no reason why i can't have a station that's both fun and profitable.

Then go do them and go with god. Why are you up my ass about it?

Again, did you read my first post? What tv series example did i put there that didn't have quality writing?

Fine.

Who's desperate? The infomercials would be run during a time of day when most mormal people are asleep! If infomercial producers are stupid enough to give me money for that time span, I'll take it happily and sleep well that night. If they demonstrate having a brain and refuse, I can just rerun daytime content in the unsold hours.

One of the elements of this thought experiment is if the station doesn't make money, that's okay because you're too rich to care.

THIS.

City TV in Toronto went for a long time without this shit (tragically, only up to September 28, 2007, when Rogers Communications brought them out and eventually got rid of all the local shows that they used to do that I mentioned before in my initial post, as well as the weekly movies) and if one truly wants to run a great TV station or network, and is so incredibly wealthy, one could do this without putting on reality TV or infomercials (the `shit` I mentioned) at all.

Cartoon blocks from 6am to noon every saturday and sunday. Thundarr, B:TAS, Scooby-doo, Johnny Quest, etc. With some of the live action stuff thrown in like Space Academy, H.R. Puff and stuff, Sid and Marty Krofft Super show, all that stuff.

Thundarr, Johnny Quest, Space Academy, (The Young Sentinals ST:TAS) Ghostbusters cartoons) Superfriends, etc.

I'd love to air cartoons on weekday mornings and afternoons like they used to do. I miss stuff like Fox Kids and the Disney Afternoon and Kids WB.

Yeah, those were the days. I remember even rushing home to see syndicated action cartoons like G.I. Joe, Transformers, Voltron, and He-Man & The Masters of the Universe.

Sure, there are a lot more cartoons on the air now on weekday mornings and afternoons with the rise of various kid-oriented cable networks, but for some reason, it isn't quite the same.
