If You Could Invent a New Starfleet Role

I would add compliance officer, one who is versed in regulations regarding safety onboard ship, assuring workplace hazards are prevented and people work safely when not facing extraordinary circumstances.
The safety officer is typically an additional duty for a low ranking officer or mid-level enlisted troop.

Although in the USN the "hairdresser" would be an SH (Ship's Serviceman), rather than a YN. Would still be under the SUPPO/Storesman in USN terms and apparently the Quartermaster in Starfleet though.

Away Team Commanding Officer - A command-level officer that leads away missions off of the ship, allowing the Commanding/First Officer to remain on the bridge.
Away Team Engineering Officer - An engineering specialist that goes on away missions requiring technical expertise, allowing the Chief Engineering Officer to remain in charge in the engine room.
Away Team First Contact Officer - An expert in alien cultures and languages that goes on away missions dealing with encountering new alien species.
Away Team Medical Officer - A medical specialist that goes on away missions to treat any injuries that may occur or study unknown diseases, allowing the Chief Medical Officer to remain in charge in sickbay.
Away Team Science Officer - A science specialist that goes on away missions requiring research or analysis work, allowing the Chief Science Officer to remain at their console/laboratory.
Away Team Security Officer - A security specialist that goes on away missions to ensure the safety and security of the team, allowing the Chief Security Officer to remain in charge of security onboard.
That's a pretty good breakdown. There are even exactly six of them.

Any away mission could require technical expertise, by the way, i.e. an engineer, due to possible survival scenarios, the not infrequent sudden encounters with hidden advanced tech, etc.

We all know about Captain, Head of Engineering, First Officer, and so on, but what new Star Fleet position would you create?

Very good idea for a thread!

In 24th-century Trek, I'd split the security and tactical functions into two distinct roles. I get that they were going for "one guy/gal handles all the shooting," but that was a horribly simplistic lumping together of what should be two distinct specialties, especially on ships with crews numbering up to 1000.

Completely agreed. It never made sense that during extensive ship combat the security officer (or Riker in "Nem") left(!) the bridge to battle some intruders in some hallways.

Have one "security officer" be responsible for all the ships stuff ("head of redshirts"), who's also doing away missions and stuff. And one "guy handling every ship function that isn't flying" - basically, two people in the front again (Sulu & Chekhov), one pilot flying the ship, the other doing all the other stuff (scanning, firing weapons, tractor beams, counting shield percentages...)

Something else:
I think Trek should go back to TOS and ENT to have a "communications" officer, solely for communication. I think Hoshi was under-used in this situation, but I think you can milk a LOT of drama out of the guy doing all(!) communcations on a show - he/she'd be responsible not only for first contacts (doubling as a sort of "first contact protocol officer), but also being the one person that talks on the radio with stranded away teams, shuttles etc. (think NASA's "capcom" in movies like "Apollo 13").

While I'm not entirely "anti" this idea, I'd question the defination of 'command-level'. To me, "command level' means a rank capable of being a CO (LT CDR, DCR, CAPT), and while I could see a LT CDR or CDR sitting on the 'senior staff' as co-ordinator a 6-man team only justify a junior officer, probably a LT or JG.

Depends on the away mission of course, but any away mission that involves contact with natives, even if it's not First Contact, can have serious and far-reaching consequences and might involve applying one or more General Orders. Presumably officers fresh out of the Academy have been schooled in this, but in matters of galactic import, higher ranking officers generally have more experience.

Holodevk cleaner, gets paid overtime after Ricker been in there.

Replicator (IE vending machine) repairman. Filled by the lowest rating.

Health and saftey office, hands out hard hats and high vis jackets to redshirts.

What's wrong with a Lieutenant Commander leading the team?

Going by the background graphics from VOY they had half a dozen Commander's and Lieutenant Commander's when the ship left DS9, with no indication of who did what.

For the longest time, I wondered.. what the hell is a Yeoman? now I know that its the captains assistant, just somebody that runs around with status reports in a miniskirt and beehive hairdo? For the Lower Decks show, PLEASE show a Yeoman in there.. hehe

I agree, Lets take Worf, He's kind of a catch all on the bridge, Security, Tactical, even Comunications. Just have him in charge of Tactical, and be the "Overall" in charge of security, but he's 2nd in comand would head security for the shipboard. And I agree, should be some type of communications officer in 24th cent. I mean, theres intra ship stuff, but theres always going to be messages comming in from starfleet, private messages, etc. someone incharge of a team that maintains, upgrades the com equpment. Plenty of stuff for them to do, not just sit there reading a book. :)

Inherently nothing, on a bigger ship like the E-D it would make sense for the Head of Department to be a Lieutenant Commander, who might lead the most important missions, but like with the Chief Engineer and Chief of (Ship's) Security not going on all the Away Teams, it would sense that most of the routine teams would be led by a junior officer (though not a fresh ensign).
