^That's why it's a "Food Replicator", no wishing for more wishes.

Yeah, but I'm sure with a few modifications....

Anyway, a food only replicator would still be a godsend to somebody like me who is hopeless in the kitchen.:bolian:

I could definitely handle a holodeck but I do wonder what it would be like to grow up with easy access to them. Sure your parents might limit your time but we all know kids who never leave their bedroom because they gamers. I would think this would be a real problem for many.

Not having personal holodecks in the house would certainly cut down on that, but since this is the future where you can seemingly have whatever you want on earth why wouldn't you?
Interestingly, it was somewhat implied in Trek that this was not a common household device. More akin to having a movie theater inside your home, which for practical reasons would limit how many people could have one. I gather there were neighborhood holosuites/holotheaters closely matching the distribution of public movie theaters today.

Yeah I know that was what was implied.. but what as stopping people other than social expectation/pressure not to have personal holodecks?

TBH, I haven't the foggiest idea.

They break so much and your average joe can't fix them on his own.

^LOL Plausible but I think that applies to a whole lot of consumer electronics we have in our homes today.

I don't know about you but I don't have an electronic device that takes up a whole room and that if it malfunctions it can kill you.

^Does a car on the highway count?

A car on the highway can kill you sure... but it generally requires either a deliberate act or an act of stupidity on one or more parties. A holodeck malfunctions about a third of the time you turn it on.

I say the episodes where the holodeck malfunctions were just the freak occurrences out of the thousands of civilian and personnel usages. Maybe a civilian went into the holodeck, spilled something on a panel, were afraid they'd get in trouble, and fleed just in time as Picard loaded that Dixon Hill program.

In short, stop badmouthing my sex box!:)

^If Warp choosers get a ship, people who choose something that can use a power source get that too.

Yes! R. Star's pickin' up what I'm puttin' down. I go to turn on my daily Hanoi Jane's Naked Workout Program* and I get Moriarty trying to take over my city? No thank you, sirrah.

* completely hypothetical possible use of the technology

Somebody installing these things just really hates Starfleet and gives them the worst possible units. Maybe that's true, there've gotta be anarchists in the Federation, too... ;)

Except Quark's holodecks broke all the time too... except at least he had decent excuses like Rom using spatula's to fix it and Klingons trashing them for double rates.

I understand why no one would pick universal translator, you can learn languages from a tutor in the holodeck, but any scientists or medical practitioners around that would want a handy tricorder? I also wouldn't be surprised if nobody picks a AI/programmed android or mobile emitter. Playing with AI could end drastically plus if you really want AI, you can play The Sims in the holodeck.

I picked the Phaser.

I'm assuming that the "Food Replicator" can only replicate food. Otherwise it really becomes a moot point, because you can get the replicator, replicate the phasers, tricorders, and even replicate a holodeck piece by piece.

You guys who picked warp drive, what would you do with it? Assuming we could get to other stars? then what? Sight see?

And I can honestly say I probably wouldn't use the holodeck primarily for sex, occasionally maybe but there's so many better things to do in one. I'd still hate the fact that I would know it's a fantasy though.
