If we had to have a returning companion, instead of Clara in series 9..

Emperor-Tiberius

Rear Admiral
Rear Admiral
.... how about Martha Jones? Her marriage with Mickey is in dissaray, her job at UNIT no longer satisfactory and all that, and then bumps into the events of the opening two-parter, and stays with the Doctor for the rest of the series.

I am asking because I really, really find that Clara's originally planned fate in Last Christmas was easily the best of the two alternatives for her. And because with Martha, it'd have been a different twist, as it'd be someone who knew the Doctor from his pre-Eleven days.

What do you think?

Anyone but Martha...

Donna.

I keep hoping the Doctor will someday find a solution to her metacrisis problem, and have a happy little reunion with her and Wilf.

At this point it's been over 1200 years since the Doctor traveled with anyone from the RTD-era. Leave them be.

Christina deSouza. :)

Perhaps Jamie? For one episode.

Jamie, definitely.

And what about Turlough? It would be interesting to see a modern take on the planet Trion. The writers in the Fifth Doctor era never really knew how to write Turlough, so it's a shame that he really only got interesting in his very last story.

I don't believe Strickson has acted for a long time. Isn't he a producer or something now?

I wouldn't object to Martha coming back for an episode but I'm not crazy about breaking up her marriage with Mickey. I thought that was a cute little development in "The End of Time."

I had this idea for Martha coming back to consult with UNIT on the same case as the Doctor. She takes one look at Capaldi and sends a text to Mickey. The Doctor grabs the phone and reads, "'Don't worry, he's old now.'?!?"

I definitely want to see more classic companions come back, like Jamie and Zoe.

As for Clara, I agree that she hasn't been well used this season. But I think her most effective departure would have been "Death in Heaven." I loved the way that they were both lying to each other to try to spare the other's feelings.

I have no idea. But there's no reason he couldn't come back for an episode or two.

Did they ever even ask William Russell if he'd like to do a cameo? Even just a voice-over on the school intercom? If they did and he said no, fine. If they didn't, what a wasted opportunity.

Yes, he's a wildlife documentary producer in Australia. But he still does some acting: Big Finish audio plays.

I feel the same way. The whole time Matt Smith was The Doctor, I hoped beyond hope William Russell would return as Ian so we could see the juxtaposition of ages. And he absolutely should've appeared in "The Day of the Doctor." Very disappointing.
