If Vulcan… (spoilers)

If Vulcan is destroyed in an implosion, as many fear, what consequences will that have for the Federation? The timeline? What important events will be the most effected? How would it change what we know as Star Trek? :vulcan:

Well there appear to be two Spocks in the mid 23rd Century now, and one of them knows a hell of alot more about physics, tech and engineering than anyone alive in the Federation. So thats an open area.

I also cannot believe that original Spock just accepts that 6 billion Vulcans have been exterminated, reconciles himself to that, and just goes on living on a colony with 10,000 survivors and thats it. He knows more than one way to time travel, so the idea that he could save Vulcan but then decide not to even try seems like an incredible thing. I sure as hell would try, if I saw Earth obliterated and knew that there was at least a chance of going back and saving it.

That argument could be applied to anything, and it doesn't hold up:

The Earth-Romulan War? Go back in time and stop it before it starts.
The Dominion War? See above.
The Borg Invasions? See above.
V-ger? See above.
The Destiny Trilogy? See above.
Voyager stuck in the DQ? See above.

With old spock's scientific knowledge and an angry starfleet maybe we could see an even more powerful but perhaps also more militaristic trek in the future

Its true that that there are any number of things he could go back and try to stop, and other than whats convenient for story telling, its not always clear why they sometimes use time travel to change events and other times not.

But surely this would be a time for at least trying.

Old Spock isn't going to overtly announce his presence to the universe. He knows that his time on the stage has long since passed. Likely he'll take part in events very quietly as they unfold, wielding a measured but largely unseen influence from the sidelines.
