The fact no Klingon war was mentioned before TOS? Irrelevant, as there were clearly prior hostilities. Ships look different and tech is maybe more advanced than it should be? Ok, Enterprise isn't prime universe either then.

If Discovery were extremely well written, I'd still be invested whether or not, but since it's only okay-written so far, it makes me more invested that it happens in the same universe.

Frankly if Star Trek decides to stop building their main universe and keep spinning off unrelated new projects called Star Trek, I will stop caring they are called 'Star Trek', and then the same standards will apply for Star Trek as they do for any old new show.

Because at this point, I think the only reason they're keeping up this pretense of being connected to the Prime Universe is because they're dickless fools who think being connected to the Prime Universe is the magic ingredient to making quality Star Trek. But we're still connected to the Prime Universe, which indeed this timeline has branched off from. This will allow us to bring back Leonard Nimoy for no reason than to remind us of this fact." And now we're seeing with Discovery "this show is very much in line with the Prime Universe and indeed the canon does match up" while doing the exact opposite.

You know what would be daring and risk-taking at this point? Completely rebooting Star Trek with no safety net connecting them to the Prime Universe at all. And it would be more freeing too, that way it wouldn't matter if a new design was for no reason identified as a Klingon D-7.

I just hope the producers aren't trying to be clever, like the start of the first episode is prime timeline but everything else isn't, which would then mean there is going to be time travel again and a possible deus ex machina.

Would have been so nice if they had given us a straight forward prequel to TOS with the same visually updated designs, lack of Klingon monologues and Vulcan holograms, maybe even a blink and you will miss it cameo by the Enterprise 1701.

One aspect they have got right is Lorca and that in the end may be the series saving grace along with Saru, Stamets and Tilly, Burnham is ok but she is mainly there so we can witness it through her eyes or so we are told.

P.S A non snowflake admiral would have been nice as well.

Honestly I don't think i'd consider that daring or risky or with a safety net.

I think that'd make their job a lot easier. I think if i was an early producer and was in the conversation of "how do we do this" my first suggestion would be "make it it's own thing cause that prime problem is going to hamstring us"

Maybe, but at this point the franchise's continued clinging to a fifty year old canon which hasn't been active for the past twelve years is bordering on the point of scared dicklessness on the part of someone in authority. The term "Prime Universe" has become some sort of security blanket that the franchise is afraid to shed, and it's just becoming sad and pathetic, and yes those calling the shots who think in these terms are fools who lack dicks, IMO.

Sure, it may seem a simple thing to do, but it would literally be the boldest move the franchise has made in the past thirty years. Probably longer.

I'm not voting because this survey is biased. "Hate it forever" and "Don't care" doesn't cover all the possibilities, and hides (no very well) an agenda from the OP.

I personally would be disappointed, but not shattered. I like the idea that this is 10 years before TOS and everyone we know is out there somewhere. I like that we know how the next 100 years will unfold. I want to see what happens with this and how the shoe-horn it into the continuity.

Nobody's said it's the Kelvin timeline - in fact, it can't be. Into Darkness established the Klingons as a vague threat who had "fired on our ships half a dozen times" in 2259 whereas in DSC, they're in open warefare in 2256.

Yep, I've had a theory that the "Prime" timeline talked about in the reboot movies might be a different timeline than what we saw in TOS-ENT, and that DIS would take place in this "reboot prime timeline."

But that was sort of dashed when they used the original type of Stardate.

I completely agree.. I was hoping before STD that the powers that be at CBS were finally going to tackle an Enterprise J series set about 50 years since Voyager and give us a Captain Archer descendant or some ties to TOS, TNG, DS9, and VOY with a few legacy descendants.. I would love to see a proper temporal cold war beginning set up. A war I am more interested in is the Sphere builders alliance and invasion of that Time line dimension.. That story line was extremely interesting.. I would have wanted to see it play out. STD is soooooo Dark.. It's not an exploration show. It's a legacy series reboot masquerading as a canon show, set as a prequel. It's trying too hard to be Kelvin, while grounding itself in Pho-TOS lore.

I know you meant it metaphorically and not literally and weren't thinking in sexist terms, but think about what it says to the half the population who doesn't have dicks and balls when you associate a lack of those things with weakness and cowardice.

Also, bear in mind that you're talking about real people, some of whom on the writing staff post here, and I'm sure others which visit the forum occasionally to check things out, and think about the level of vitriol you're directing their way over a philosophical difference in how to make a fictional TV universe work.

With that in mind, please make an effort to tone down the rhetoric a bit.

You don't think a Temporal Cold War wouldn't be dark? That sounds like trading one war storyline for another I don't see how having another type of war somehow immediately creates more positive feelings in a show...color me extremely confused.
