If there was only ONE season of Voyager?

q264

Lieutenant
Red Shirt
Alrighty time to play a little game! If there was only one season of Voyager and you had to choose 26 episodes out of the entire series run to fill the list, which ones would you choose? To make things easier all two-parters count as one episode, so "Caretaker" and "Endgame" should be episodes 1 and 26 respectively. Try not to choose just the "best" episodes but ones you feel carry Voyager's narrative scope in a way that would make a great one season show from beginning to end.

1 - Caretaker
2 - State of Flux
3 - Twisted
4 - Meld
5 - Basics
6 - False Profits
7 - Darkling
8 - Scorpion
9 - Scientific Method
10 - Year of Hell
11 - Message in a Bottle
12 - One
13 - Timeless
14 - Thirty Days
15 - Course: Oblivion
16 - Think Tank
17 - Relativity
18 - Equinox
19 - Tinker, Tenor, Doctor, Spy
20 - The Voyager Conspiracy
21 - Pathfinder
22 - Live Fast and Prosper
23 - Unimatrix Zero
24 - Repression
25 - The Void
26 - Endgame

That was more difficult than it initially sounded, especially trying to balance events that involve crew members appearing and disappearing from the series. I think the only departures I did not cover were Kes and Neelix.

I've no problems with ignoring the departure of such peripheral characters, but you did forget to include crucial episodes like 'Ashes to Ashes' and 'Latent Image' that explain the disappearance of pivotal crewmembers like ensigns Ballard and Jetal. Who could hope to even begin to understand VOY without those ?

I don't know about the whole series, but here's how I'd reformat the first 4 seasons into one season in order to create a sort of narrative "story arc":

1. Caretaker (series premiere)
2. Paralax (establishing Torres as engineer)
3. Phage (the Vidians, Seska)
4. Prime Factors (Carey, Torres, Seska, Janeway, some Starfleet/Maquis tension)
5. State of Flux (Seska leaves)
6. Learning Curve (essentially the "end" of the Maquis arc)
7. Elogium (Kes begins to mature)
8. Cold Fire (Kes continues her growth; we meet the female Caretaker)
9. Maneuvers (the Kazon arc continues)
10. Alliances (ditto)
11. Meld (introduction of Lon Suder)
12. Lifesigns (Kazon 'traitor' arc; also incorporates the Vidians)
13. Investigations (ditto; ends the traitor arc)
14. Resolutions (an end to the "Vidian" arc; as well as Janeway/Chakotay)
15. Basics 1 & 2 (the end of Kazon arc, as well as Seska and Lon Suder)
16. Warlord (the Kes arc continues)
17. Fair Trade (Neelix's function as an alleged guide ends)
18. Scorpion 1 & 2 (arrival of Seven Of Nine)
19. The Gift (Kes departs, leaves Voyager with a 'gift' of being propelled ten years closer to home)
20. The Raven (Seven of Nine character building)
21. Message In A Bottle (re-establishing contact with Starfleet)
22. Hunters (Hirogen arc 1)
23. Prey (Hirogen arc 2)
24. The Killing Game 1 & 2 (end of the Hirogen arc)
25. Hope And Fear (series finale; ends of a happy note of Voyager being 300 light years closer to home)

Undoubtedly it isn't elegant and probably still misses some important bits, and the resolution of "Hope And Fear" is obviously still open-ended. But I think on the whole it'd be a internally-consistent set of episodes for a single 'season'. ;)

You're kidding right? We never saw either of them before they "reappeared" and they were never to be referred to after that.

Ooh... Fun! No order.

1. Caretaker
2. Future's End
3. Real Life
4. Scorpion
5. Counterpoint
6. Bride Of Chaotica
7. Someone To Watch Over Me
8. Dark Frontier
9. Tinker Tenor Doctor Spy
10. Thirty Days
11. Drone
12. Year Of Hell
13. The Killing Game
14. Q2
15. Infinite Regress
16. Timeless
17. The Voyager Conspiracy
18. Equinox
19. Repentance
20. Macrocosm
21. Worst Case Senario
22. The Q and The Grey
23. Bliss
24. Latent Image
25. The Gift
26. Living Witness

That was actually harder than I thought.

I see you didn't forget to include the one where the doctor gets a piece of Janeway's ass.

Nope. I chose it because it was a great Doctor-centric episode. Now Macrocosm... That I chose because Janeway, in a white tank top, carrying a gun!

Trying to go in Chronological order

1. Caretaker
2. Parallax
3. Phage
4. State of Flux
5. Maneuvers
6. Alliances
7. Investigations
8. Basics
9. Future's End
10. Unity
11. Scorpion
12. The Gift
13. Day of Honor
14. The Raven
15. Year of Hell
16. Hope and Fear
17. Night
18. Drive
19. Timeless
20. Bride and Chaotica!
21. Equinox
22. Tenor Tinker Doctor Spy
23. Pathfinder
24. Life Line
25. Lineage
26. Endgame

That was hard. I really wanted to include the Hirogen arc in there but then I would be going heavy on the first 4 seasons. Also wanted to include some light hearted fare in there which is why Bride of Chaotica and Tenor Tinker Doctor Spy are there.

Yeah, I admit I'd struggle to do it condensing all 7 seasons into one. There's too much good stuff in Voyager. :)

]1 - Caretaker

14 - Thirty Days
15 - Course: Oblivion
16 - Think Tank
17 - some one to watch over me
18 - Equinox
19 - Tinker, Tenor, Doctor, Spy
20 - The Voyager Conspiracy
21 - Pathfinder
22-Blink of an eye
23 - Unimatrix Zero
24 - Repression
25 - The Void
26 - Endgame

Yes, "The Voyager conspiracy" contains a somewhat distorted recap of things that had been going on, on Voyager.

But in the same spirit I would have also included Shattered.

Shattered, why? It seemed disjointed with who remembered what in the end, and why only Chakotay? And possibly Janeway. I really enjoyed it but not if I only get 26.

Because of the reminder of a few episodes that it contains, (e.g macrocosm, the pitcher plant thing, basics, scorpion, plus others)

Plus the good speech about why sometimes things should be played out? :-) If I was Janeway it would work on me.

It didn't seem likely that it would have worked on her either. Chakotay would have had to sedate her and lock her up somewhere.

Seven should have realized that her plan to assimilate Voyager after 8472 was defeated failed, since Chakotay obviously came from the future and well, he wasn't borg.

Yes.

But only because I assume the poster I reacted to was too and I decided to go along with that.

Seriously though, it wouldn't be easy to condense all of VOY into 1 season... I would have to think about it.

Oui, even though the addition of italics does not really convey the effect. I just have a "thing" against them, which in the case of Neelix I think is just the feeling of unnecessary "comedic relief".
Having said that, I have nothing against Voyager in a holistic context, nor any other Trek (except Abrams). I just wish my younger self had the foresight to see that VHS would be superseded, as now I have to duplicate my collection on DVD. However young mind + double sided covers =

Plus, of all the Chakotay-centered episodes, "Shattered" was the only good one.

Also, why has nobody listed "Threshold"?
