If the new show is set in the Prime universe...

...do you want to find out what happened to the characters from the previous shows?

Personally I was fine with assuming the crew of TOS grew old and died at some point between the movie era and the TNG era (McCoy and Spock excluded obviously). It was nice to think of them still out there in the 23rd century. I didn't mind Scotty's TNG episode but I hated what was done to Kirk in Generations. I could have lived without knowing he fell to his death and was crushed by a bridge.

I don't want old characters showing up just to die or to find out they've had horrible lives since the last time we saw them.

What does everyone else think?

I agree with everything you just stated. I'd rather them just move everything 100 years later if they don't just do a straight-up reboot. Let those characters stay in the past having lived full, albeit less adventuresome, lives.

Essentially that's why I'm expecting to be disappointed in Star Wars VII too. I really don't want a Star Wars movie that explains that after Jedi everyone had a falling out and went off to grow into old hermits, but it looks like that'll be the starting point if JJ isn't screwing with us again. Unless Kylo Ren turns out to be Khan too.

No.

They can say the series is set in the oldTrek universe or the nuTrek universe or in Universe 75 - that doesn't matter too much. What matters is that if it resembles the 1987-2005 run of Star Trek too much no one but a few million hard core fans will watch it.

Yeah I'm not too happy about that either. Way to ruin a happy ending:lol:

That's not the question I posed. I asked "if" the new series is set in the prime universe. I wasn't asking if you want it to be be based there or not. That's irrelevant to this thread.

I don't think it's massively important to me to know, and perhaps the show will be better off set that bit further into the future. That said the occasional reference would be kind of fun, like a passing mention of Admiral Picard or something. STIID had a few of references for Trek fans (sec31etc) which although pretty clumsy had the right idea.

The rather silly end of Voyager with all that replicated armor tech means some things I'd rather forget haha

And I answered your question immediately: No.

And then, I expressed my opinion of the question's premise. That's how it works.

If that's your opinion of the quesion's premise then why did you bother replying at all?

Surely you could have added that opinion to a relevant thread. Dismissing the premise of the thread is unconstructive. If you have anything to add to the discussion that doesn't involve shutting it down then that would be appreciated. "No" was a start but can you expand on that? That's how a discussion really works:)

If, hypothetically speaking, the show were set in the Prime Universe (I do not believe it will be), it will still have to stand on its own and be relevant to the casual viewer now. If it makes it through several seasons, then do the self indulgent story that only appeals to fans.

No.

Out of all the shows made from 1987-2005, there was exactly one character I really, truly cared about: Data. And I know his fate.

No. The horse was beaten for 15 years, shot, buried, dug up, beaten, buried again, and now people are saying that the horse hasn't been beaten enough.

Ditto. I'll just assume Picard went on to have a successful post-Captain movie career while the rest went off to do behind the scenes stuff on Earth.

I don't think so. Though it was certainly fun to see Scotty on the ent-D, I don't need to see an episode in which Geordi (or even Picard) is discovered in a stasis field in the late 25th or 26th century or some such thing....

This is my thinking too. Though if it is in the original timeline some of the characters will still be alive depending on which century it's set in. No need to contrive anything to have a guest appearance from Q or The Doctor for instance. Except maybe their aged appearances:rommie:.

No thank you. If it's set in Prime, I know I would not be interested in hearing what happened to the characters from shows past. I like the idea better of them continuing to have their own adventures forever and ever.

Unless you're Data.
Or Trip.
Or Kirk.

Also, I don't even think I personally am interested in going back to the prime universe at all.

.
Yeah, I have similar sentiments. I like to think of the different Trek characters out there having adventures, after the ends of their respective series.

And, of course, one would assume that these characters would eventually grow old and die, but we don't really need to see this.

Nah. I mean, it'd be nice to hear something, I guess, if a story really requires hauling characters from the old show back. But I'm content to suppose that Mike got off the Satellite of Love somehow, and that the Mads went about their business, and we don't have to worry about them in the new show.

Er, we are talking about the New Mystery Science Theater 3000, right?

No. IF it's set in the Prime universe and regardless in what era then I would rather they just avoid making a big deal out of previous characters. I would also prefer they not bring anyone in for a cameo or guest appearance.

It'd be more fun to have it set in the nuTrek universe and occasionally have the actors from the old shows pop in for cameos - I mean, what did Jean Luc Picard wind up doing, in the nuTrek continuum?

And then, random nuTrek recasting: have Denise Crosby show up as Deanna Troi. Better still, have Pamela Lee Anderson show up as Deanna Troi.

We'll call it Star Trek: Watching the World Burn.
