It's a textbook example of a cliffhanger so yea, bad ending for a one season show.

They could have gone the "Millennium" route and have it resolved in an episode of "Arrow", though.

Nah, whatever. There's no particular story element left hanging, just an action beat. It's a cheap cliffhanger as far as the actual storytelling goes. If it was the finale we would all just know that he saved the world somehow. Possibly dying in the process, depending on how bittersweet each individual viewer likes their endings.

It did resolve the big arc, so other than the vortex there weren't any big cliffhangers, so I guess it would have been OK.
