I think there's a few different ways to come at this question. First, there's the "How would you have done Generations?" question, which I don't think you're really asking. Then there's the, "What changes would have been made to make it into an episode?" question which really hits at the differences between what a movie can do and what a series can do. There's also the, "How would you split this into two episodes?" question. Then, there's a mix of these questions.
I'll address the latter first, since I think that's the crux of what you were asking. Without checking the runtime and making a guess, I'd say the "prisoner exchange" would make for a good cliffhanger. Picard beaming down to the planet I think would work nicely. It gives the 2nd part something to pick up on and is a more dramatic versus action-packed cliffhanger, which is what TNG really used to great effect.
The second question I've seen others address better here, except for the obvious, Data would not get to use a "colorful metaphor," unless it was "Damn."
The first question is probably better for the movie forum and again, is something I don't think you were asking. I'll just say that the whole logic behind the Nexus never made any damned sense to me and I'll take any opportunity to say that needs to be changed. At the very least, some dialogue needs to be inserted to explain why he couldn't fly a ship into the Nexus instead of diverting it.
