If Shatner had been Unavailable...

That gets me to thinking....

Shatner as James West and Conrad as James Kirk. Interesting.

The shows would be pretty different. Shatner was the better actor, and Conrad was a lot more athletic.

Didn't Shatner do a WWW type show called Barbary Coast or something?

Yes. ‘The Barbary Coast’. I think it barely lasted one season.

I'll be more progressive

Interestingly, there isn't a list of possibles in Inside Star Trek, as there is for the season two Nimoy replacement (but they admit that was basically a way of pressuring Nimoy: "We don't want to replace you, but if we have to do so we have lots of actors in mind.").
In view of Assignment Earth, I'd guess Robert Lansing would have been a possibility.

Well I think Gary Conway would have been the better Kirk. He was more classicaly handsome than Matheson, was in amazing shape and had a wonderfully stylistic fighintg style. Check out his fight with Matheson in the LOTG episode "The Golden Cage." And he could chew scenery as well! He went full frontal Shatner at the top of the Giants pilot: "it's drawing us in....like a magnet!"

Irwin Allen might have agreed with you, but for some reason I see Conway (like Robert Conrad) as the pure action adventure type, while Don Matheson would have supported the "serious drama" aspect better. Maybe that's not fair, and it's coming out of what Land of the Giants scripts gave Conway to do.

If you think Shatner's lifts were high...

I've always said Jack Lord would be terrible. Maybe he'd be different than he was on Five-O, but it's hard for me to picture him developing the troika relationship. McGarret might have liked Danny but he always treated him like a little brother who needed guidance, at best. In 12 seasons you could probably count on one hand the times someone other than McGarret had a good idea.

My nominee: Martin Milner.

That coulda been interesting.
How about Fess Parker (if he wasn't already occupied with Daniel Boone). Though maybe he would be a better alternate McCoy. Also would have bee a good guest-star as a colonist or something.

Ed Ames for Spock then.

This article is relevant to the discussion, but I'll leave it up to @Harvey and @Maurice to tackle the facts in it.

YMMV.
Well, some of the outside-Lord info is slightly off, especially repeating the Shatner (who wasn't there) account of why Jeff Hunter didn't return. The Martin Landau bit is utter rubbish. Dororthy Fontana flat out told us face to face that it was ALWAYS Nimoy, and while their casting people suggested alternates, they never really considered anyone else.

The stuff about Lord seems closer to reality, but I don't know that he was their first choice post-Hunter. @Harvey might know this better.

Friggin' THANK YOU! I've been saying this for years, but Landau has said it (even saying why he didn't "accept the role"), TV Guide and other magazines repeated it and people just hooked onto it. It's like everyone wanted to be the guy who turned it down. [shrugs]
