If our solar system is located in Sector 001, then…

…what does Sector 000 contain? Has it ever been referenced in Post-TNG Trek?

In the Star Charts book, they explain (IIRC) that the 8 sectors surrounding Sol were numbered in order of exploration. 001 was explored first, 008 last.

Personally, I prefer to think that the Federation designated Earth in Sector 001 because...why not? If it's a Federation star chart, then it can be Federation-centric and quite arbitrary. And "Sector 001" is really no less arbitrary than "Alpha Quadrant." Other spacefaring nations likely have their own star chart systems with their own way of dividing up the Galaxy, and they may have a totally different designation for Sector 001. Universal translators may keep everyone on the same page, but as far as we know, Civilization X may call Sector 001 Sector KN-11752 in their own non-translated language, IMO.

There was no year zero (outside Kampuchea). 1bc was followed by 1ad (though it was centuries before that idea was applied. The concept of zero was imported from Arabic maths). Same for sectors.

0 is nothing. 0 is the sector that does not exist. It is the absence of sector. The real question is where is Sector -001?

There is a Sector 000, but you can only get to it by accelerating to Warp Ten, and nobody's been in the mood to become salamanders lately.

Sector 000 would contain the Vulcan system, of course, the oldest spacefaring race of all Federation founding members.

Now, I thought Starfleet Headquarters was built far out in the middle of nowhere as an arbitrary location initially. (Starfleet Technical Manual?)

000 might be halfway between Earth, Vulcan, etc?

Here on Earth a good location for a space elevator…if ever doable…might be zero lay, zero long…where the Prime Meridian intersects the Equator south of the hump of Africa. Calm. No hurricanes…

There is no Sector 000.

Sector 000 might exist for the purposes of the Star Wars universe, but that's a discussion for another forum.

UFP doesn't have a Sector 000 when it comes to their "Exploration Sector" list because they don't want to have to adjust every sector by (+1) for the sake of programming indexes. It also confuses normies, who aren't programmers, as to why every number needs to get incremented by 1 from their listed value, to their "Real Value".

"Exploration Sector" Sector 000 DNE (Does Not Exist) because it's used as a glorified Swap File Pointer or Temp Variable when swapping data in memory.

This makes use of an existing Link List or 2D array where the index starts from 0, but doesn't get used normally.

Ergo, no wasted memory.

I would say it depends on how this sector system works.

If the sector numbering system is counting based it would make sense there is no sector 000. You usually start counting by 1, so the 'first' sector you designate would be (00)1.

If the sector numbering system is coordinate based, I would expect there to be a sector 000 - i.e. a sector that has index '0' on all three spatial dimensions.
