If not Shatner, then??

I think Leslie Nielsen would have been a good Kirk. He basically played the Kirk-type rather well as J.J. Adams in Forbidden Planet.

Ok, so that might have worked then. What do you guys think of him as Kirk?
Heaven forbid a guy with a Scottish word for a last name be played by a Galswegian. It's unthinkable.

But yeah, Connery would have made a fine starship commander, also.

Personally I think Connery would've been a good Picard (sans any French background), but I can't see him as Kirk.

I think it took a while for "Kirk" to become Kirk. The character would have evolved differently with a different actor in the role.

True. For the first half of the first season, he was still the brooding captain, full of self doubt, suffering for his crew. Once they started writing to Shatner's personality, he started becoming the Kirk we all know, love, and occasionally mock.

Agreed...I think part of the lure for watching TOS/season three is watching Shatner pretty much ham up every episode...I think he read those scripts, realizing how bad they were, and his best to mock himself..

Well, you really have to restrain yourself to guys who would have appeared in a minor American TV show at that point.

Connery was by 1966....well... he was James Bond, you think he'd go back to playing on TV? Especially some silly sci-fi show?;)

That being said... if we're going Bond actors as Trek actors, I'd say Roger Moore would have made a fantastic Robert April.

I think he would have been done with The Saint by then...

CRAP, that show wasn't done until 1969 and started in 1962.
