If a 2001:A Space Odyssey game was made, what'd you like it to feature?

If a (serious or humorous) 2001:A Space Odyssey video game had to be made, what would you like it to feature or cover ?

Re: If a 2001:A Space Odyssey game was made, what'd you like it to feat

...something more than floating in space for 5 hours :p

Re: If a 2001:A Space Odyssey game was made, what'd you like it to feat

"My god, it's full of stars.." followed by twenty minutes of drug induced mindbending psychedelic imagery set to Pink Floyd's Echoes...

What could be more action packed and thrilling than.......

2001: The Text Based Space Odyssey :p

You find yourself in a white room, decorated with victorian furnishings. There is BED, a DRESSER, and a NIGHTSTAND. Directions are LEFT, SHUTTLE, and HALLWAY.

- go down hallway

You are now 20 years older, you find yourself in a kitchen. There is is a GLASS of WINE on a TABLE. Directions are HALLWAY and BEDROOM

- Drink Wine

It is delicious, but you knock over the glass and it becomes SHATTERED BITS on the floor.

- Look at glass

There is no Glass....

- Look at shattered bits

My, What a mess you've made. You are now twenty years older, tucked into bed. A large black MONOLITH appears before you. Directions are blocked by MONOLITH.

-attack monolith

Attack was too frail to affect monolith. Monolith Transforms you into Space Fetus

An adventure game certainly..following the movie but allowing for different outcomes and ways to get there..

Awesomely funny! A text adventure approach has potential.

An interesting question, Cingular; 2001 seems tough to adapt to gaming. TSR took a stab at it in 1984, though, with an adventure module (32 pages plus fold-out maps) for their pen & paper Star Frontiers RPG:

1. Dawn of Man: PCs are primitive man-apes, struggling to survive in the African wilderness. About a week is covered, with terrain and survival aspects on days 1 and 2, skills learned from the monolith on 3 and 4, and using those skills against carnivores on the following days.

2. Lunar Excursion
: 4+ players explore the Clavius-Tycho region of the lunar surface, using sensors and other equipment to locate the monolith (which is at one of 20 possible locations).

3/4. Jupiter Mission/Through the Star Gate
: 2 to 5 PCs (Kaminski, Hunter, and Whitehead can be asleep or awake) go through the events of the movie (the GM naturally plays HAL ).

Being able to explore the interiors of Space Station One, Clavius Base, Discovery, etc. in detailed 3D walkthoughs (like the amazing Starbase 11 and Virtual Dreadnought mods for Elite Force) would be enjoyable for those who like such things, though there's not much actual gaming there and the creation effort would be enormous. Keeping things simpler (plain 2D graphics or even just text) would provide more gaming for the development time.

I used to be a fan of those old Infocom text games. And yes, that was very amusing btw.

A scene wherein the player must convince HAL to open the pod bay doors.

So you want it to be a Metal Gear Solid game?

Re: If a 2001:A Space Odyssey game was made, what'd you like it to feat

Some sort of memory puzzle based on comprehension of the Zero-Gravity Toilet instructions. ;)

One of my favorite movies, by the way...a transcendent experience.

Re: If a 2001:A Space Odyssey game was made, what'd you like it to feat

Clarke (and Gentry Lee) managed to turn Rama II into a rather interesting adventure game. If it could be done with one of Clarke's lesser novels, it certainly could be done with 2001: A Space Odyssey (perhaps incorporating elements from the three sequels).

Re: If a 2001:A Space Odyssey game was made, what'd you like it to feat

I'd like to play a man-ape (or is it ape-man?) and break skulls!

Re: If a 2001:A Space Odyssey game was made, what'd you like it to feat

Kudos to Wendl (where did you get those maps?) and Kirkman (interesting lesson there-never laugh with hot coffee in your mouth!).

Thanks. I scanned those samples from the adventure module which I bought some years back and still have hanging around. Its creative exploration of 2001 game possibilities seemed to deserve a mention in this thread.

Looking around just now, I was surprised to see that Star Frontiers still has an active fanbase with sites like this one. If you're interested in seeing more of the 2001 module, it's posted there as a pdf file.

Re: If a 2001:A Space Odyssey game was made, what'd you like it to feat

I think a game could be made if you split it into acts and based the concept around a 3D adventure game. See LucasArts' "The Dig" for an example of this. Make everything on the ship interactable, employ the use of puzzles and sporadically introduce action sequences like the "Hal! Open the pod bay doors!"

Re: If a 2001:A Space Odyssey game was made, what'd you like it to feat

I'd be more interested if it were about 2010, that movie was more interesting.

Re: If a 2001:A Space Odyssey game was made, what'd you like it to feat

A real-time strategy game set over several million years, where YOU are the Monolith, in a frantic race to push primitive alien life forms onto the path towards godlike status. :D

I found those Discovery diagrams on-line years ago when I was looking for reference material for a possible 3D version of the ship (except they part from a 2010 RPG, which I assume was made by the same people and so reused whatever was needed).

Re: If a 2001:A Space Odyssey game was made, what'd you like it to feat

I think it should be "Lego 2001: A Space Odyssey" that spans the entire timeframe of the first movie and requires you to find hidden monolith pieces throughout the game in order to unlock the 2010 level and go aboard the Leonov to Jupiter.
