IDW's "Vulcan's Vengeance" (ST Ongoing)

I enjoyed the first issue a lot. I hope they can keep up the quality and the twists and turns. I'm glad the writers are starting to explore and play around with the freedom the alternate universe provides them. Though I recall a reference to the Delta Quadrant. I wonder if that was a mistake.

I'm going to assume it was since the "Delta Quadrant" had a lot of Andorians and Tellarites and other background Alpha/Beta Quadrant species. Perhaps they meant to say Beta? That would explain the presence of all those familiar species, plus setting it in the Beta Quadrant would make it close but leave plenty of unfamiliar territory that it would explain the whole "forgotten corner" thing.

Although the different title is hopeful, I suspect issue 11 is basically going to be The Trouble with Tribbles with very little different.

I dunno. Changing the name really alters the established pattern. Maybe David Gerrold didn't want his original script being adapted?

A different media release says, "... an ALL-NEW story! Inspired by the fan-favorite episode "The Trouble With Tribbles".

Would they need to get the original writer's permission for the remake stories?

Probably not, but after Harlan Ellison supposedly successfully sued CBS for an undisclosed settlement due to the use of "City on the Edge" dialogue in a Hallmark talking ornament and the Pocket "Crucible" trilogy of novels, maybe they are clearing things more carefully?

The previous IDW remakes have credited the original writers with "based on the original teleplay".

Which presumably means that the original writers or their estates are getting royalties for the adaptations. Credit equals payment.

Credit equals payment in Hollywood. Is it necessarily the same case in comics publishing? IDW has been gleefully reprinting comics originally published by Marvel, DC, Wildstorm, etc. complete with creator credits, but has not been cutting any checks to those creators.

^True, but the difference is that the original writers in this case worked in television, and I think the contracts there are somewhat more expansive about compensation for reuse, with fewer loopholes that would allow someone to reuse an author's script without compensating them.
