The one thing jumping out at me that could use some real improvement is the eyes on most of your people are kind of big and oddly shaped. Other features are suffering a similar problem, but not as badly. I'd say take a few more looks at real eyes and faces in addition to some of your favorite comic artists to see how they replicate and simplify features for such illustrations.

Good luck!

Looking good! So is this about IDW doing a remake of the original DC MU storyline?

No I just used it as a sample storyline. You know me and the Mirror Universe.

They already rejected me. I asked them to keep me in mind should they do a Titan series since I know that ship pretty much inside and out.

Unfortunately or not that is my style. It has almost always been that way.

I guess that comes from my early exposure to Star Blazers & Macross.

And until we learn anatomy our 'style' is stick figures and bulgey balloon people. You can always improve your 'style'. Saying that you have anime influences that keep you from having well-shaped, symmetrical eyes is simply an excuse.

I'm not just trying to be a dick here, but if you really want to be an artist you can't blow off criticism with "that is my style", because style or not, It just looks sloppy to me.

Look at some real eyes and put some effort into replicating the actual structural lines that go into an eye, rather than drawing an almond shape and calling it a day. You can always stylize them, but til the foundation is there you'll always just be drawing a symbol of an eye, rather than an eye.

I would suggest checking out these books for help on this matter and any other people-drawing issues you might have: http://www.placidchaos.com/AM/index.php?title=andrew_loomis&more=1&c=1&tb=1&pb=1

Trust me I was not blowing off the Crit. I welcome it as I have with all of my Dark Mirror and Titan Work. I have been working in the Design & Illustration field now for over 14 years so I live and work with crits all day long.

I was just stating that I was influence at an early age.

Well, the layouts look good, and since some of the greatest comics artists out there can't draw the Enterprise to save their lives, you've got a leg up on that front.

I'm guessing from your figures, though, that you don't start from a basic stick figure skeleton form and flesh it out. This seems more like the "draw it in its finished form from the get-go" approach, which is fine, it's where the vast majority of us start, but as some have pointed out, it can lend to a kind of weirdness to the apparent structure of the person -- because there is no underlying structure to the person.

I recommend "How To Draw Comics The Marvel Way", there's a very good section on this very issue.

Oh I have that book. I have had it since the 80's

I did hear back from IDW and they turned me down since they are heading into a film-noir feel. I did get a sample script from them and I am about to temp about 3-4 pages out of that script in that style.

At least the Editor has been really good about emailing me back.

A couple of comments, neither of which have to do with the actual quality of the art.

One: Part of the point of this sequence is to play coy and not reveal the true identities of Mirror Kirk and company until the final splash but you have the "sword-through-the-Earth" mirror Empire symbol right in the first panel. So you've ruined the surprise.

Two: What you've done here is essentially duplicate a sequence from a previously published work. A big part of what ID or any comic company is looking for is not just how well you can draw but how well you can tell a story. What you show here is how well you can copy Tom Sutton's storytelling. If you're going to use previously published works as your plots (and there's nothing wrong with that-gotta get a plot somewhere) then what I suggest is that you look through the book, jot down some rough notes on what happens each page...then PUT THE BOOK AWAY. Don't reference it, do your own thing. And it doesn't have to be Trek work either. What they are looking for is can you draw people, can you put those people in an environment, and can you tell a story.
