IDW announces crossover: Transformers, G.I. Joe, Trek, Ghostbusters...

Re: IDW announces crossover: Transformers, G.I. Joe, Trek, Ghostbuster

Ages ago IDW said they hoped to do another Countdown-style prequel to STXII (on trekmovie.com, while promoting the STXI comic, IIRC). I'm guessing that'll be the first proper nuTrek comic. I would have been thrilled, but I kinda lost faith in IDW after the whole Nero/V'Ger thing.

I'm beginning to wonder if IDW is scaling back or eliminating its Trek line?

It seems pretty clear that IDW has scaled back it's Trek offerings, but it may ramp up production a year from now in the run-up to the next movie.

I want to see a Battle of the bands between The Archies & The Picards.

Re: IDW announces crossover: Transformers, G.I. Joe, Trek, Ghostbuster

The only projects I see on there are a couple by John Byrne... and none of those have a scheduled release date.

Precisely why I said "Visit regularly for updates."

IDW already announced they'd dropped one issue (Garrett) from its "Captain's Log" mini-series and, recently, Byrne's "McCoy: Frontier Doctor" seemed to compress two separate adventures into one issue for its finale. The mini-series are more often four issues than six these days. So yes, they're seemingly cutting back at the moment. I doubt they'll let it drop completely with a new movie on the horizon.

I just got Star Trek: Infestation #1. Can't wait to read it at lunch.

Hopefully, Kirk will deliver a flying leg kick to a zombie at some point in the two issues. :)

^And then a zombie will throw a flying leg at him.

As in Lamb right? Or are you so much of a geek you don't have much understanding or interaction with women and why some women (and men in my case) find that highly offensive in describing a woman.

Re: IDW announces crossover: Transformers, G.I. Joe, Trek, Ghostbuster

Well, it's not nearly as bad as I was afraid it might be. That's not to say it's good, by any stretch of the imagination. The art is particularly disappointing. The likenessses of Kirk, Spock and McCoy are, ummm, well, unfortunate. OK, they're terrible.

The story is straightforward and moves along pretty quickly. Almost too quickly. I think it could've profited from being longer -- 2 issues means that you have to be halfway done in 22 pages.

The "A" cover is definitely the one to get. The artwork is cool, and it's the only one that uses the retro Gold Key Star Trek logo. They should've used that on all 4 covers, if you ask me.

Re: IDW announces crossover: Transformers, G.I. Joe, Trek, Ghostbuster

I enjoyed it. Love the fact that it's post-TMP (and also references the recent IDW "Frontier Doctor" mini-series). I was kinda hoping for scenes set on the Enterprise, and maybe glimpses of TMP alien crewmembers. I couldn't decide whether I liked Cover A or B best, so I bought both.

I thought the stars' facial likenesses were fine. Always amuses me when people hate the likenesses, or yearn for photorealism depictions of overused publicity stills we all recognize.

They don't have to be photorealistic -- I LOVE the Sutton/Villagran likenesses in the first DC series. They didn't look exactly like Shatner, Nimoy and Kelley, but each one was distinct and consistent. I always knew who was who.

All it takes to satisfy me is if I don't have to run through a checklist in my mind to determine who: "OK, so that one's definitely Kirk, and I'm pretty sure that one is Spock, so by a process of elimination, that third guy must be McCoy, even though it doesn't look very much like De Kelley."

Pages 21 & 22 are particularly unsatisfying.

Mmmm. I can't see that those pages are any better or worse than the rest. The characters seem consistently drawn and inked in Gary Erskine's style. (But if I focus on their ears too long, the negative shapes do start to look rather bizarre.)

Re: IDW announces crossover: Transformers, G.I. Joe, Trek, Ghostbuster

The two-issue Star Trek: Infestation mini suffered from the same problem as the Transformers mini, and I suspect the same problem will Plague GI Joe and Ghostbusters-- too quick and easy a resolution.

The threat is barely understood and explained when McCoy comes up with his miracle cure of the week. The Britt character from the CVO series makes a token appearance and is quickly defeated.
IMHO, the mini(s) should have (all) been three issues instead of two, that way they could have developed the story better.

That said, Infestation has been fun so far. I'm also glad that I decided to go "all in" for this event. I almost skipped GI Joe and Ghostbusters, but one issue in for each, and I am enjoying them as much as the Trek entry and far more than the Transformers mini.

Of course, with Zombies vs. Robots heading for the big screen, IDW's decision to go ahead with this event makes a lot more sense now.
