Elba's going to replace Chris Pine as James T. Kirk!

Since he was announced as appearing in next year's Star Trek Beyond, fans have wondered just who Idris Elba would be playing. In a new video to promote the Star Trek Beyond Omaze campaign, Elba himself answered the question.

"Not to blow the plot, [but] I'm the new Captain Kirk," he says, pushing Chris Pine — the actor who replaced William Shatner in the role with 2009's reboot of the franchise — out of the way. "Did you not know that?"

Sign me up. First David Oleyowo as 007 (sort of!), and now this? I'll watch the shit out of a Star Trek movie with Elba as Jim Kirk!

I'll be intrigued to see if anyone actually falls for that and writes an outraged blog post. :rommie: Oh, Idris, you scamp, you.

Nah, he's Sam Kirk. Only now, Sam's younger than Jim, and since Winona remarried after George, that makes Sam and Jim half-brothers.

That's why the kid in XI needed his redubbed to Johnny.

Elba could be speaking the truth, in a tricky reverse psychology and loosely plottish sort of way, since they know we won't trust a word they say after the Khan debacle. And the joke will be on us.

He's playing James R. Kirk, a stack of book with legs who was positively grim at the academy. James T. Kirk was always having to say "No, I'm the other Jim Kirk."

Idris is the first casting choice for every film currently in pre-production, production and post production. He should also play every iconic character in fiction from Beowulf to Batman to Bond.
