STROKE: Remember the 1st Three Letters....S.T.R.

If everyone can remember something this simple, we could save some folks...

RECOGNIZING A STROKE

Thank God for the sense to remember the '3' steps, STR . Read and Learn!

Sometimes symptoms of a stroke are difficult to identify. Unfortunately, the lack of awareness spells disaster. The stroke victim may suffer severe brain damage when people nearby fail to recognize the symptoms of a stroke.

Now doctors say a bystander can recognize a stroke by asking three simple questions:

S *Ask the individual to SMILE.
T *Ask the person to TALK and SPEAK A SIMPLE SENTENCE (Coherently)
(i.e. It is sunny out today)
R *Ask him or her to RAISE BOTH ARMS.

If he or she has trouble with ANY ONE of these tasks, call emergency number immediately and describe the symptoms to the dispatcher.

New Sign of a Stroke -------- Stick out Your Tongue

NOTE: Another 'sign' of a stroke is this: Ask the person to 'stick' out his tongue.. If the tongue is 'crooked', if it goes to one side or the other, that is also an indication of a stroke.

I got this in an e-mail. It was pretty informative so I thought I'd share.

Let it be known that the picture only shows an Ischemic Stroke (clot), the other kind is a Hemorrhagic Stroke (bleed).

On the onset of an Ischemic Stroke, you have a window of the 3 hours from time of stroke to administration of clotbusters at the hospital to save their life.

I was also told to have someone raise their eyebrows.(to see if they are even) I had never heard of that. I just had a stroke evaluation because I had some numbness in my arm. It turned out to be a pinched nerve for me, thank goodness.

The stroke thing is always a worry for me. Once when I was younger (16 maybe) I think I had one after getting my wheeler buried in the snow. After busting a nut trying to get it unstuck I almost collapsed, got super sweaty, couldn't breath. I came out of it ok but ever since then it's worried me. It might have been nothing too. Never know now. But it opened my eyes a bit.

Figure if this post can help even one person recognize the symptoms of a stroke for someone and get them help it's worth it. I know it's not the most exciting MISC thread. :)

FAST is the one we're getting bombarded with.

Face
Arms
Speech
Time (to dial 999)

I wish i had read these before my mom passed away of a stroke. Good on you for collecting the information. One never knows when it is necessary.

Although I've noticed in hospital they simply ask the patient to puff out their cheeks (facial, before anyone gets a fit of comedy).
