In the third season, Joan should have a love interest that she develops a serious relationship with over the course of the season. It would raise some interesting questions like can Joan have a romantic relationship and remain an effective investigator? And how will having a relationship affect her partnership/friendship with Sherlock?
The love interest should be someone who can go toe to toe with Sherlock and understands or shares Joan's enjoyment of the kind of a life she leads with the master detective.
