ICQ Sound Help

Hopefully I'm posting this in the right forum. If not, don't hurt me too badly.

Here is my problem. A while back, the morons at ICQ did a forced upgrade to (I think!) 6.1.

The problem with this is that it nuked my custom sounds. I now have their lame sound scheme. I really don't need a tugboat sound when I log-on.

I went all through their options and their very lame help section and forum (most of which is in German. I can read a bit, but it's not very useful as it seems many questions in that forum went unanswered.)

Anyhow....does anyone know how to put in custom (my custom, not their lame custom) sounds? Normally, I would just rename my sounds and swap it over into the forum and end of problem.

EXCEPT...my sounds were WAVs and they now use MP3s! And I have no idea how to convert mine to that.

It's hell to be middle-aged and technically clueless at times. Is there a way I can use my sounds there?

Thanks for any help. Please dummy it down. Don't assume that I'll know what you're talking about (with apologies for that bad grammar.)

There used to be a sub menu where you could assign the sounds to different events. I haven't used ICQ in a while so I'm not sure if that still exists.

Sometimes I would nuke the startup sound by going to the the Program Files\ICQ directory and find the sub-directory with the sound. Then I would delete the sound file that annoyed me.

You can convert .wav files to mp3s with CDex, but I'm not sure about changing the sounds, I haven't actually used the ICQ client in years.
