I would like to have friends, how does one accomplish this?

So, last August I moved out of state, I am 1,000 miles away from where I was, in a new town, and I know no one. Now, typically people meet friends through work, unfortunately, I work my job from home, so I am home all day working and thus don't have a job to meet people at. I'm not really a social person, don't go to bars, or clubs etc... So how might a person like me actually meet people and make friends, and find people that are interested in things like me like SCIFI and such locally?

If you play Magic or D&D or something like that, go to a local gaming store and sign up to play with other people. At Mayhem here in town, they have a bulletin board where you can post looking for group members and have Magic and Pokemon card tournaments.

I'm not into those games

Looks like your only options are a social club or volunteer work. Shouldn't be too hard to find out what's available in your area. Aren't there websites for doing exactly that?

Well you already nixed bars, so I'm out of ideas. :p
Are there bars especially for sci fi geeks? If there were I'd be drunkle in one now...

Why not then? Goths have their own bars. I won't even sleep with Goths, they get makeup all over everything and they don't bathe often enough.

So there's an idea. Start up your own bar, with a sci fi theme, have sci fi movies playing on the tube over the bar, have Star Trek trivia nights, free shooters for the best costume, etc. Call it "Risa" or some such. Hire cute women as servers and give them pink wigs and silver costumes like the women on Gerry Anderson's 'UFO'. Refinish the walls in metal so it looks like the inside of a Klingon ship. Have separate areas with blast doors. A coin operated R2 unit that comes up and dispenses drinks.

You'll make a fortune, and have your choice of sci fi geek friends, and probably get laid.

I don't think you'd have to go anywhere near that far. Just having shows besides fucking sports on the tv would be a fantastic start. Theme bars tend to be too expensive and get really old.

My friends and I have made the bars we hang out in into geek bars, heh. We generally just find a dive bar with low patronage and cheapish beer and get all our geek friends to start going. Once you get to know all the bartenders, they'll turn the tv to whatever you want as long as there weren't already people there watching something else. We've brought in games like Lunch Money, Munchkin, Apples to Apples, etc. It's not uncommon to walk in there and find us all talking about Star Trek or some fantasy series we've all read or politics or sex or whatever. Though with dive bars here you're usually surrounded by drunk rednecks who insist on playing country or shitty metal on the jukebox, or hispanic guys who are constantly trying to hit on you and get you to dance. Both can be fun sometimes though.

You might try making a profile on a few of the free dating sites. You don't have to be looking for dates specifically----any contact you make through there will be hesitant at first anyway, so you can go wherever you want with it.

More likely he'd go bankrupt ;)

According to Wikipedia, Boone, NC has a population of just under 15,000. I'd love to be wrong, but it's hard to imagine a Star Trek bar thriving in a one horse town like that ;)

Anyhow, the volunteer work thing sounds like a good idea. Or maybe join a gym - if you're home all day, it'd be good to both get out of the house and get some good exercise. The gym I work at has a very relaxed and friendly atmosphere and makes lots of opportunities for members to get to know each other socially. Maybe find something like that?

There is a sub-forum on this board specifically for meet-ups. You might have Trekbbs posters living in your neighborhood.

This won't help you make friends, of course... but at least you'll find out if you need to remain indoors at night.

Big problem right there.

Otherwise, all I can say is stop feeling sorry for yourself and get involved in your community. Join your local Jaycees or Rotary groups. Get off your ass, find some community bulletin boards and do something with yourself.

meetup.com Or it may be meetups.com.

It lists the local social groups in your area from sci-fi groups to political groups to dating groups.

Making friends is easy. Just find someone you like, get them to add you on Facebook and then murder all of the other people in their friends list. Then they'll have to like you because everyone else is dead.

I met all of my friends either through work or school, so I really don't know what to tell you. You can borrow some if you want.

I don't know about social clubs, but volunteer work is a good one. Find some sort of volunteer work you're actually interested in and get involved. There's lots of different volunteer activities out there, so hopefully you find something interesting to you and go from there.
