I wish laundry machines took debit cards

One of these days I'm going to live in a world where we apartment-dwellers who don't have our own washers and dryers will not need to have an obnoxious number of quarters just to wash our clothes.

I have 4 load of laundry I want to do today. How many quarters do I need to wash those 4 loads of laundry?

48.

48 quarters.

And my apartment does not have a change machine.

My apartment does have a change machine, which is nice. And the deli on the first floor of the building will make change, too.

I know what you mean, though. Be nice if I could just swipe a card.

But my laundromat is a little behind the times as it is. I'd rather they invest in newer, nicer machines first.

How much do you pay? It's $1.50 a load to wash, and a quarter per 7.5 minutes to dry. So, I can do a whole load for about $2.50.

Are you really paying $3 a load just to wash? Eugh!

It's $1.50 to wash, and $1.50 to dry for an hour (and you have to use a full hour, or it won't turn on), so $3 total for every load.

I actually don't mind the lack of a washer/dryer in my apartment. But then, I just exit my door, go down a flight of stairs, and turn left, and there's the laundromat.

I'm sure if you have to make a considerable journey to get to the laundromat, it would be a real PITA.

Both my washer and dryer died about three years ago. Rather than replacing them, which I can't afford, I use the local laundromat. I can get all of my laundry washed and dried in under two hours, which is great; however, every two weeks I go to the Credit Union and "withdraw" $30 from my account in quarters. The beauty of this is that quarters come in a $10 roll. So, I don't see the problem.

For me, it's $1.75 each for both a wash and a 45 minute dry cycle, but that's not too bad, since it's only four coins (a loonie and three quarters) here. It's much more manageable, I'm sure, than seven quarters for each one would be. ;)

Same here but with a problem - the washing machine here have ongoing problem that they eat your money. It get damn expsensive to wash that way (and 45mins is barely enough time for the dryers though they upped it - we were paying $1.75 for 35 mins).

But there's no change machine and this is place has been rebuilt as accessible housing for people with disabilities so most of of them are in wheelchairs so getting out to get change is difficult for many.

^ Yeah, we lack a change machine as well, which is annoying as I feel compelled to save my loonies and quarters, especially at this time of year when it's harder to air-dry clothes.

About 8 years ago, I had an apartment in Austin, and the laundry room machines took quarters OR special credit cards. There was a machine on the wall where you would slide your card in, and it would let you buy these temporary cards, charge them up with whatever amount you wanted, and then use that card in the machine. It was very handy.

Before I got a washer and dryer, I found that cheap little card very useful.

Laundry is one of the biggest pains in the balls around! Not only do you need to consciously save quarters, it takes a good 2 or 3 hour chunk out of your day or night. Total pain. Going to the bank or 7/11 to get a roll of quarters is nice though.

The one and only good thing about doing laundry is not getting free shirts out of other peoples dryers, it is for that one fleeting off chance that you'll run into a hottie doing her laundry at the same time as you.

I didn't have my own washing machine in my previous place. I feel your pain. You never realise how much of a luxury a machine is until you have to live without it for a while.l

My apartment doesn't have washer/dryer hookups, but I devised a workaround solution. I bought an apartment washer that hooks up to the kitchen sink. I wheel it away in a closet when I'm not using it.

I used to hang my clothes to dry, but then I found a dryer that runs on 110 volt current (instead of the typical 220 volt current that dryers run on - that's why they have to have the special plug), so I can just plug it into a regular outlet. I have it sitting on my balcony, so it vents to the outside. The washer and dryer paid for themselves within about 6 months. No more quarters.

At least with the washers and dryers in the building I can shot downstairs toss a load on then backup stairs till it's done.

And as the machines are usually quiet during the day I put two on a t once.

Same here. I do my laundry on Sunday mornings. The place is usually pretty dead, and the cycles take 30 minutes on the dot, so I can set an alarm and be down there right as the load is ending. I'm done in a bit over an hour. Not bad!

my apartment has those Mac-Gray washer dryer things where you put your money into a machine and it puts it on a card that you swipe in the actual washer/dryer
