I can offer a little update, they went to court and were remanded in custody until they have to record their plea which is nice. Todays news article is here. The police did give me a little more info but I'm not sure it should be posted on the Internet

As for me, I'm knackered, I can't sleep and I had to end an examination because the doctor was getting to close and it was freaking me out, even though earlier on I was fine being poked and prodded by five doctors at the same time.

Hopefully it's a good sign, in some odd biological way. I guess that you're freaking out because what it is is beginning to sink in, though that's only an amateurish guess.

I think it means, as opposed to *intent* to cause bodily harm.
That's okay. It's perfectly understandable. You're just starting to come out of the shock. Be patient with yourself.

Nope, it means bodily harm of a lesser degree than 'grievous' bodily harm.
'Assault' has several categories in English law.
In increasing severity, these are:
Common Assault
Battery
Assault occasioning Actual Bodily Harm
Grievous Bodily Harm
Grievous Bodily Harm with Intent
Attempted Murder
All degrees require intent, although some are differentiated by what the intent was (eg. GBH and GBH w/intent are distinguished between whether you meant to just hurt someone a bit and ended up causing GBH and whether you actually set out to cause GBH)
I suspect this person charge with ABH is not charged with stabbing, but instead punching or kicking. A stab wound is sufficient for GBH.

As to the proximity of the perp...hope any family is not the retaliation type. Be careful, there maybe friends/acquaintances in common.
