I want to punch Jack in the face

RoJoHen

Awesome
Admiral
Has there ever been a more unlikable main character? He's so skeptical and combative about everything. I'm rewatching the show (just started Season 2), and especially with all the Hatch stuff, he's just unnecessarily opposed to anything that anyone says. I know people say they hate Kate, but god, Jack is so damn obnoxious sometimes.

I think most of that comes from fear. Fear of the unknown which the island definitely represents. Fear of things that are out of his control which was a number of things that happened on the island and the "destiny" Locke had been talking about. Fear of losing control over his life. His inability to save everyone.

Also the creators and Matthew Fox said they didn't see Jack as a hero but more of a tormented, flawed protagonist.

I loved Jack early on. The last two seasons have been very trying though. Now I too would like to smack him down!

I think he's more annoying in the beginning in light of the last couple seasons. I mean, for as good as his intentions might be, the dude fucks up A LOT, yet he still has the nerve to act like the high and mighty leader.

Before the show is over, I really hope he figures that sometimes he has no idea what the hell is going on.

If there's one character on LOST I can't stand, it's Kate. Were I Jack, I'd have shot her before Season 2.

I dunno, I quite like the idea that Jack is actually pretty crap and makes mistakes.

I think the creators of the show were turning the idea of the lead on its head.

Jack is frequently wrong, but not in the "hey, he's just like us!" way. He's an idiot and I hate how each episode he looks like he's going to cry.

On the flip side RoJoHen, keep your eye on Sawyer on this second time around and you'll see he isn't as bad as many people (myself included) thought the first time we watched season 1 and maybe a bit into 2.

I beleive I had a thread here in the Lost forum last year called "Who Never Screwed Up?" and many of us saw that Jack and Kate should've just run off together and started their own mutual-admiration society where Jack and Kate could take turns running out into the jungle with Kate/Jack following him after s/he's told her/him not to twice.

Sayid is pretty reliable.

Jack does get annoying at times, but a lot of things on Lost do. Kate, the constant early on back and forth treks across the jungle, the japanese guy, the pill, etc.

But...remember in the beginning it was very much Faith (locke) vs Science (jack) and it makes sense that he would be questioning everything. And I like that he's a fuck up.

I like Jack. He's not my favorite character but he is relatable. There seems to be a constant inner struggle between looking confident for the sake of leadership and his lack of self-confidence. I think he recognizes that he is not at all perfect and that's what scares him and drives him to keep trying to "fix" things.

Is there any character we haven't wanted to smack in the face at least once?

Maybe Rose?

I like Jack, he and Sayid are still my favorite of the Losties.

The thing with Jack is that everyone turns to him for leadership, but he never wanted it. He never thought he was good enough for it, but someone had to take charge so he did. Remember all those early flashbacks of his where his dad was always telling him he didn't have the right stuff, or he couldn't cut it when things got tough, etc... Well I think he's been trying to prove his old man wrong this entire time. But maybe his old man was right.

I think the writers have really done a fantastic job with taking the male lead and making him a giant control freak douchebag.

I thought your title was relating to Jackface

I didn't like him at first, I thought he was the stereotypical Hollywood hero and I wanted the show to focus more on Locke, but I started to soften to him around All The Best Cowboys Have Daddy Issues, and by season 2 I thought he was okay. My only major problem with him around that time was the fact that he spent far too much screen-time with Kate, the black hole of likeable personalities.

Season 3 is when he started to annoy me again, he had some awful episodes that season (the tattoo one has to be one of the show's all-time worst), and he never really recovered for me until all the Oceanic 6 stuff in season 4/5 when I saw how he was a broken man trying to fix everything that went wrong without knowing how. His arc was one of the things I really enjoyed in season 5.

I agree with this, everyone thinks that Jack is a natural leader for some reason, but he's not, he's a screw-up. We all thought his father was a mean drunk, but apparently it was foreshadowing. :)
