I tried showing STV to the family...

Threshold made me stop watching New Trek - that night - and I didn't like VOY or DS9 very much anyway. Infact, I've only seen 3 episodes of Enterprise since then...

Call me closed minded... but I'm waiting for XI =)

BUT...
the first 20 minutes of STV? I'll take the beginning and the end (on Earth) stuff over any of the action in the middle or the climax. I actually like what are probably the first 20 minutes.

But yeah... Center of The Galaxy...
A mutany story could have been much more interesting.

I showed 'The Final Frontier' to my wife, and she pointed out that it seemed improbable the Enterprise A could reach the center of the universe in an hour(that's my baby!). I truly think STV is my least favorite Trek movie.......I'd almost rather watch Nemesis.

Nemesis is their favorite STNG movie!:) Its my 4th favorite overall.

In answer to why I tortured them....well they asked. I should have used Q's line from "Encounter at farpoint": "Are you sure you're ready for a full disclosure of human ugliness? So be it fools!"

I hate the campfire scene, and I thought maybe they would think its quaint....my wife started saying how ODD their dialogue was, and insipid the drunken jokes were. Its strange to me how people use those very scenes to defend the movie.

Um...perhaps a slight overreaction?

This movie is not that bad...

Agreed-I can't imagine someone turning it off for being that BAD. However, I showed it to my wife, (when I was married) and she loved it. She thought it was very entertaining. She actually liked it more than me. I liked the character moments between the big three but overall its far from my favorite.

You sir, have inspired me. Well, inspired me to spend 5 minutes on Google and Photoshop anyway.

I can't understand how people confuse the difference between potential & quality.

A stand-alone, loaded with action, character driven movie COULD have been a great departure for the trek movie franchise, but....

The story was weak and poorly thought out, the effects were terrible even by 1989 standards, the 'humor' was ill-concieved & demeaning, the action was not exciting or coherent and the 'climax' was boring and aborted.

A few nice character scenes do not redeem such a movie.

1-4 & 6 all had flaws in different amounts, but 5 is an inheirantly flawed movie.

Sad because the late 80s were the dawn of the mega action movie (Die Hards etc)---if the TOS cast had gotten one last shot at a movie with both action AND good character development it would have been great.

Why for goodness sake waste time & budget and the storming of Paradise City (at the beginning) when nobody we cared about is involved.

Note: that the actual attack was FAR longer before editing.
Shatner had wanted a huge battle on the Enterprise with Sybok's forces vs the crew---so why didn't someone tell him not to waste all the budget and shooting schedule on the ragtag army attack?

But hey a solid 50% of the fans LIKE Scotty hitting his head!!!
'Very funny', 'great stunt for an old guy', 'not annoying or demeaning at all'
So if that's the case the bar isn't set too high anyway--pardon the pun.

It's from All Star Batman and Robin. I only saw the panel out of context, so it feels like a repeat of "I'm the goddamned Batman" in terms of ridiculousness.

I think TNG's "Nth Degree" mostly "corrected" that. Sybok may well have been infected with a Cytherian probe as Barclay was and fudged-up the Enterprise-A's engines like Barcaly did and afterwards the changes allowed them to get back to Fed-space but the know-how to reproduce the effect was lost.
I like your theory, but it wouldn't really explain how the Klingon ship got there.

Oh and for the record, I didn't mind Threshold and TFF.
Don't forget TATV, Two Days and Two Nights, A Night In Sickbay, and Spock's Brain
With the exception of Spock's Brain, I like all those too! :)

Uhhhh. They ran into a Cytherian probe too?

I don't think so - I've pretty much been a TOS and TOS Movie guy.
I didn't like most of DS9 - the Dominion War, etc.
I didn't like Voyager very much (okay - you're going where no man has gone before - can you please do something interesting and stay out of the halodeck?)

It was the nail in the coffin.
And I've been justified - they ain't making a Nemesis II or a Voyager or DS9 movie, are they?

^Ironically enough, I'm positive that DS9 (at least in the form it took for its later years) would be much better-received if it started today than it was 15 years ago. Shame it was always the odd series out, because IMO it was easily the best of them....

Agreed. DS9 was the greatest Star Trek series of them all, hands down.

Indeed - they went all the way out to the desert, did all these shots, and ... it wasn't that interesting. They kind of shoot around the Enterprise but that's where I thought the fighting or drama could happen...

You did a good job of pointing out the flaws in the story, and noting that the climax was aborted, which doesn't leave much to stand on.

For all its faults at least TFF gives all the cast their moments and in my view captured the character interaction from TOS.

Of course I'm 110% biased as i will watch anything with TOS cast in it.

No, but after threshold there were 100s of trek episodes and other movies. Now all ofthe 100s weren't good but there were thsoe that were stellar. If you aren't a fan of DS9 or didn't watch much of it there really isn't much point in going further in this part of the discussion.

Well your own opinion is justified to yourself certainly, but the Star Trek franchise isn't doing all that badly anymore.

You know TFF isn't THAT horrid IMO. It is more watchable for me than Nemesis. At least the interactions between Kirk, Spock, and McCoy nearly save it...nearly.
