Fair point, although in this case we're more talking about appearances on the spin-offs than on the main series. In my case, I just want to see more Mickey because I maintain he was the best companion before Donna came along (in series 4, that is).

I know, and perhaps the classic series companions were perhaps too disposable at times, but sometimes I think the modern Who's gone too far the other way.

I certainly agree on that. As much as I love seeing everyone together in "Stolen Earth"/"Journey's End," I do admit it was a bit over the top (but I think manning the TARDIS was fantastic so it balances out). I'm mixed about happening all over again in "End of Time" (or whatever it'll actually be called) but I'm giving that case the benefit of the doubt because I don't think everything is as they appear (I really hope the speculation of The Doctor going through a nightmare scenario is accurate).

Personally, I always like it when TV shows develop large ensembles of recurring characters -- Buffy, Angel, West Wing, Deep Space Nine, Babylon 5, Battlestar Galactica, etc. all did it. So I definitely like seeing old companions recur.

Oh, don't get me wrong, I love recurring characters, particularly in the cases of The West Wing, Babylon 5, and Deep Space Nine, but for a show like Doctor Who it's a bit limiting when the universe (and a couple of alternate universes) and the entire existence of time is your playground.

Good point EMH, the concept of Who is very different to say BSG. Don't get me wrong I like reccuring characters as well but like I say, I think NuWho's overdone it slightly, and I do concede classic series probably didn't do it enough (barring the UNIT years)

See, to me, I don't think they do it ENOUGH. For me, Doctor Who does too many random characters of the week that we meet once and never see again, even now. I don't find its use of recurring characters limiting at all, because I find the planet-of-the-week/random-guests-of-the-week format very limiting (whether it's on DW or ST or whatever).

I do not think this TV show is what you think it is!

The whole point of Doctor Who, one of the main reasons it's lasted as long as it has, is because of the broad canvass it can use. A comedy episode in Henry VIII's court one week, a gothic horror in a 27th century spaceship the next...

Frankly much as I love ensemble arc filled shows of now, I do sometimes miss the good old days when I could watch any old episode of TOS or Next Gen without worrying about what came before/after it. Much as I like BSG, for example, all its episodes kinda merge into one big blobby mass for me. One thing I love about Who is that it still retains that seperateness to its episodes, yet can also re-use characters and have an arc to it.

But I don't want to see every episode on earth feturing a cast of companions/companions mums/dads/brothers/granddads (ok maybe a companion's grand dad)

I'm still grateful RTD never gave us an episode featuring Jackie/Francine and Sylvia who all happen to be at the same jumble sale as the Doctor that's then invaded by an alien snot monster...I bet he thought about it

Journeys End was the classic example of 'too many characters'. As excited as I was to see Rose, Martha, Mickey, Donna, Sarah Jane, Harriet Jones, Gwen, Ianto, Jack,and K9 all in the same episode, it all felt like too much. There wasn't enough time for all the characters to get their moment in the sun.

They at least explained that Martha was on her honeymoon. God only knows where Mickey was.
