I think we just need to accept the fact that this is a full reboot.

. If you make a significant change, you should have a story reason for the change. Cosmetic changes are not simply cosmetic changes.
.

Star trek never has.TMP total change to many things, zero explination. The klingons got 3 major changes, and no a joke 30 to 40 years after the fact was not ab explination.

Trill, Romulans, Vulcans, Bajorans and dozens of other races got redesigns. No in setting explination needed.

I fit my Doctor Who idea of continuity close to that of Red Dwarf and MST3K. Anything goes, no explanation needed; its part of the premise of these shows.

Star Wars I hold to a higher standard, but due to its fantasy status, I give it a lot of continuity lateral too.

Star Trek is, or perhaps was, the Gold Standard. The franchise has historically attempted to maintain the suspension of disbelief through more grounding in reality than other series. Continuity is supposed to be important, and this includes forehead ridges and technology. If you make a significant change, you should have a story reason for the change. Cosmetic changes are not simply cosmetic changes.

I still think the only way this show makes sense as a Star Trek show is as a reboot, alternate universe, or mirror universe... Unless they explain it somehow.

I just state anything which contradicts on screen is one of three things:

1. The meddling with the timestream which is constant.
2. Q
3. It's just a TV show.

It's not a reboot but if keeps some fans from having aneurysms from their anger then far be it from me to tell them they can't consider it a reboot. Go for it, guys.

No excess skin off my comically exaggerated cranial ridges.
