I think Shelby and Data made love in The Best of Both Worlds Part 1.

It doesn't matter, really.
- If a gold shirt has to be transferred to a planet or starbase to rank up, Data would have been a fine asset there. And here's a thought... if that admiral in "The Offspring" had had any brains at all, he'd have brought both Data and Lal to his research facility and put Data in charge of the project of developing more Soong type androids. Not only had Data replicated Soong's work, he had exceeded it!
- If ANY ship would allow its second officer to be a commander, it's the "small town in space" flagship.
- And if it's gotta be red, then that's fine too. Other officers have changed shirt colors, after all. Counting DS9, Worf did it twice.

Data is a disappointing

7 years/seasons and he stayed Pinocchio learned nothing

Emotion chip upgrade solved everythng

My dog is much smarter than him

Admiral Toddman wore gold in "THE DIE IS CAST".
Right. An admiral, that's a head of a Starfleet branch. Kind of like I'm sure there's all kinds of upper ranks in blue suits, in charge of branches of scientific study. I only mean it seems like there's a ceiling in yellow suit advancement aboard ships & outposts etc... where if they want the 3rd pip, it's only available in command red suit positions, which I suppose there's some sense to that, maybe.

A year is so much longer for Data since he remembers everything, and doesn't sleep.

This thread started because I imagined Data answering the door to Shelby shirtless, but he doesn't sleep naked or sleep at all. Is it possible that if he wears his clothes for weeks at a time, no sweat and filth, and his superman like super strength, between washing them, that his clothes wear out many times faster than anyone else?

Humans of the 24th century do not launder their clothes.

They decompile their dirty clothes, and replicate fresh clothes every morning.

Data can go a week possibly without decompiling his clothes?

Regular humans only wear the same shirt twice if they are having sex over night somewhere unusual.

Misunderstanding his habits, an over observant busybody may wrongly assume that Data is a poon King?

Could have been a desire to be in (direct) control issue. AI improving on itself is a scary thought to most people, perhaps it still is in the 24th century.

Well, he breathes, has a pulse, dreams, and grows hair. Maybe he has other human traits.

Well it may be autonomic, or it could be governed by convenience?

Are you suggesting something that looks like sweat, smells like sweat or both?

Data was never designed as an infiltration model.

To bring this back, on topic, if Data did not sweat, during a lengthy cuddling, a lack of lubrication, would start with chaffing, and finish with deep raw grazes, for which he would lose points.

No, he's certainly not designed as an infiltration model, but why go to the lengths of making him breathe, for example? I see no immediate advantage of that, save perhaps for making the humans he interacts with feel more at ease (and I even doubt that would actually make a difference).

Dr. Bashir, making a guest appearance, explained it best: "Your creator went to a lot of trouble to make you seem human. I find that fascinating."

He did, but he could have made Data's face and eyes a whole lot more 'human-looking' - we can do that today. It would even have been way easier than some of the other things he did to make him 'seem human'. So why didn't he?

(And no, I don't buy the 'too human' explanation from Lore, because Lore had exactly the same face and eyes.)

(Of course, the real reason would have been that Data needed to look distinctly non-human on the show, but that's not an in-universe reason.)

Soong was able to make the Juliana Tainer android body more realistically human-looking. Perhaps Data and Lore's appearance was an intermediate design, and he intended to upgrade Data's exterior later on. But then the thing with the crystalline entity happened, and the Data project was abandoned.

^Hadn't thought of Juliana, she of course proves he absolutely could do so. I guess, then, that it simply wasn't his first priority when working on those androids.

It doesn't seem like it was that hard... when Data created Lal, he was not only able to make her look perfectly human, but he was even able to give her a choice on how she looked.

Perhaps Soong didn't want his androids to look too much like him.
Exactly. People forget that when he began making them, & using his own likeness as the model, he too was the same age as the appearance of those models. It would've been rather inconsiderate of him to have indistinguishable multiples of himself wandering around... especially after Lore went bad & folks would've been wary of them thereafter.

It's possible he intended to alter them to be more human looking eventually, like with Julianna, or he expected they'd just do it themselves. What's weird is they both Lore & Data stay with it, maybe out of reverence for their original design. Data could make all kinds of alterations or enhancements but never does.

That said, so much of Data is designed to emulate human design, including his skin, which even has pores just like ours, as he clarified in The Naked Now. Soong was deliberately making an AI that he wanted to experience being in a human form as much as possible. He'd have actually spent more time & effort making all the dressing for his AI as he did the matrix itself. The former was the primary goal. He wanted to invent an artificial human

So then why would Soong do that? Invent an AI but then imprison it within as close to a human form as advanced science would allow? Because maybe he felt being an intelligent lifeform that exists as we do has intrinsic value in itself & perhaps in general.

For one thing, Data is perhaps much less likely to think all humans should be eradicated like V-ger or Nomad for example, because he knows intimately our experience. He can identify with us.

Hmmm... Data with alterations and enhancements.... that's probably enough to inspire some people to write fanfics of doubtful quality ...

:guffaw: Well, I only meant like he could've figured out a way to incorporate something like Geordi's VISOR tech into his own vision, so he could see in different or additional bandwidths like Geordi does... & vice versa for that matter.

Soong seemed to be ok with giving Data human traits that were superior, like faster, stronger, smarter, more durable, more long-lasting etc... but he never went outside the human realm of attributes, when that was certainly doable
