I think Reed was a bit of a steriotype.

Actually, I kind of like the idea of the guy in charge of the weapons and security being gay, precisely because his job would be considered "macho."

As did I. I like shattering stereotypes. This is akin to Roddenberry wanting a woman as Chief of Security, etc.

Same here. It would have been fun, playing against the stereotype. And I've seen Dominic Keating live at a convention: he can be really fabulous when he wants to.

Good topic. You're right, looking back on it, I think Reed was a bit of a stereotype.

On Reed being gay -- I think that would've been interesting as well. But, if they did depict him as gay, it'd be best if they didn't make a big deal about it. I saw a post once that I really agree with. Rather than have a big "coming out" episode, it'd be better if they show him doing his normal routine with a glimpse of something that leads us to believe he's gay. For example, waking up next to a guy. Homosexuals, after all, have really only one difference than hetereosexuals -- their sexual preference. What a small thing!

Yeah, if Trek ever really does finally feature a gay character, that would be the best way to go about it. If you push it too hard, you come off as looking like you're trying to overcompensate, and it would seem fake and just thrown in there to satisfy the PC crowd, rather than to serve the character.

Or receiving a letter from his husband back home.

I've heard this idea, but I've never quite understood it - at least not why him in particular, as opposed to Archer or Mayweather or just "why not one of them?"

Maybe because I'm a Reed/Hoshi shipper. *shrug*

Thing is, people in Hollywood (wouldn't say America in general because I honestly don't know) believe in a British stereotype that has nothing to do with reality at all. As a people, we have a tendency to not take things seriously enough at times, sporting a "don't worry, relax" attitude that drives my German co-workers at the office insane. Of course, I can only speak for the automotive industry, but still....

...if you want stiff upper lip (and that is by no means meant as an insult), go to Germany. Those guys are very, very serious and love their protocol, much more than we do over here. That is good and bad at the same time, depends on how you look at it.

And personally, I think that Reed should have been from Corby. He'd walk onto the bridge and say "hello yous, ladies and mens". *cringe*

But seriously, stereotypes are so annoying- by all means, make him an awkward, uptight sort of bloke, but because that is who he is, not because he's English.
