For the last week I've been acting in Alicia's play. It thas been a difficult, stressful process, but rewarding when everything came together. It has helped me take my mind off Thames and everything that happened with him. He didn't even come to see me act. I doubt I'll ever see him again.
The play is quite complicated, which is to be expected coming from the mind of Alicia. My character in the play is a real loser, which upset me at first, until I understood the character. What makes it in interesting is that my character is part of a play himself. A play within a play! Have you ever heard such a thing?
In the play, my character tries to make himself look interesting by inventing a more exciting life, full of all kinds of outlandish events, the kind of things that would never really happen to anyone. It's so unbelievalbe that the audience is supposed to know that it's all being made up. It's just supposed to be funny, really.
The first night went great. People were shocked by the things my character said. There was some nervous laughter. Some thought he was being genuine for a while. Others suspected something was up. There were a few comments from the audience members saying things like "this can't be for real!" but, in general, they enjoyed the play and just had a laugh. A good time was had by all. My character enjoyed it a lot. He thought he'd fooled them! I enjoyed it. They were in on the joke but just having fun with it.
I was a bit irritated by a couple of them though who tried to completely pick apart my character's story. They'd comment after every line. It could be kind of amusing, but, I don't know, it seemed a bit too "obvious" to me. They'd point out every intentional joke. I mean I think most of the audience picked up on them anyway, they didn't need them pointed out. Still, I was happy they were enjoying it, at least. I did wonder though if they realised the jokes were intentionaly, that my character wasn't actually a real person. That there was an actor behind it all, creating this character who in turn was creating these outrageous and comical lies. It wasn't really clear if these pick-aparters were having a go at the actor (me) or having a go at the character himself for trying to "get away with" these lies, when, of course, he wasn't trying to get away with anything, but he was just a stupid character and there was no genuine attempt at deception. But I went on.
Every day my character would tell more and more outrageous stories. The audience still came. They started comparing it to a tv show, making jokes about "ratings" going up and down and the "network" ready to cancel my character if his stories weren't good enough. As absurd as it sounds, I felt under pressure to keep the quality up. I tried. I did okay. But they still made comments about "writers' strikes" and such when I gave a below par entry. It was a bit annoying, because they they just kept repeating the same lines again and again. Like beating a dead horse. Still, they were listening to my character, they were still coming every night. So why not?
On the fourth day I was busy and had other stuff on my mind, so I just tried to wing it. I tried to indicate that my character didn't really know where his story was going either, to add antoher layer and hoped the audience would understand. They didn't. Maybe it was my fault for coming back for a fourth night. I should have left it at three, I guess. But it was just wasn't the same anymore. The context had changed. Everyone was too "in on" the joke to the point where they'd almost forgotten what the joke was and were just demanding more and more outrageous stories. I tried to pace things a bit, like I had on the earlier days, but the catcalls got worse. I didn't understand why they didn't just get up and walk out. None of them seemed to be enjoying it. And there was a great deal of hostility directed toward my character now. "FAIL!" they shouted at him, and other internet memes. They seemed to have forgotten again that he was just a character trying to invent outrageous stories. Yet they continued to point out that it couldnt' possibly be "real", as if that wasn't clear by now. It sucked all the humour (BUT YOU'RE AMERICAN, YOU'D SAY "HUMOR", I SPOTTED A MISTAKE!!) out of it.
At one point they all started flirting with a girl in the audience after she told a story about a male fiend of hers telling her he wanked over her ass. This was a bit weird. I tried to play along with it, but they kept scoffing and saying I was getting desperate and not fooling them anymore. I definitely think they had completely lost any sense of the concept now. Still, maybe it was my fault for going on so long. I had created expectations and I wasn't living up to them.
But neither of us were getting anything out of it now. If I did managed a good entry into the story they'd just say "boy you tried REALLY hard to make that a good entry, but it's still FAKE FAKE FAKE FAKE LATVERIA ISN'T A REAL COUNTRY, I SPOTTED THAT, I'LL STEP ALL OVER THE JOKE." Well, yeah.
So I decided to quit.
Don't get me wrong, I had some good times. I think many of the audience DID enjoy it. Even the ones trying to show how smart they were by constantly pointing out the joke must have appreciated it. And I wasn't angry with them, in the end. It was just time to stop.
I told Alicia. She smiled. She said the audience members had been plants all along and I had been filmed by HIDDEN CAMERAS to see how I'd react and now it was going to be a tv show! I was outraged...for a few seconds. But that was just Alicia being crazy Alicia!
I wanted to come on here and tell everyone. I wrote this whole entry. Alicia asked why I bothered anymore. I said I honestly didn't know. I shut the browser. She asked if I was sure I wanted to do that.
"I don't expect MadBaggins will ever be posting on TrekBBS again," I said. "But it was fun. I hope they remember me fondly."
