Ok.

Friend of mine needs to locate his parents here in New York. He has their first name, last name and the town (rather large) that they live in.

Their number is unlisted, the town won't open its records, and the police just shrug even though this is a hardship situation.

He's on the verge of losing his home and stuff, but can get help by filling out forms and he needs this information like RIGHT NOW.

Reason his parents "disappeared" is they don't approve of his life choices (renounced churchness and all that) and he can't get ahold of them through normal means.

Friend has very limited monetary reserves right now, can't hire an investigator or spend more that $50 on this.


Come on Miscellaneous, don't let us down... you folks know EVERYTHING.

Put an advert in the local paper saying that there's a reward for information in locating them. Put their names in the add and where they may be located.

I saw such an add only today in my local newspaper.

He should send letters to each church of his parents denomination in the city they live in, and ask the pastors for help.

I was going to suggest the church idea but 1001001 beat me to it.

Does he know any of their friends - preferably friends with unusual names? He could try calling or writing to them, with a cover letter explaining why he needs to get in touch and another letter to his parents.

He could make some phone calls to churches in the area - the religion his parents are affiliated with. With luck he could find a sympathetic listener who would help him out and/or might know the parents.

I would suggest going to a forum designed for genealogists and posing this question to them. They are experts at finding people.

Do you have public access to the Electoral Register or equivalent in the US?

Here in CA, DMV records are considered public; I imagine that is also the case in other States as far as their transportation offices are concerned. On-line "White Pages," although sometimes not up-to-date, may also list people's current and former addresses and telephone numbers.

Drone, that link had a resource that was able to locate the family contact information. Thank you very much.

We're trying to help this fellow out as much as possible without giving him money (other than secretly paying his rent he has no idea who did that for him! ), he seems willing to help himself but the situation is overwhelming, or at least it seems that way.

Yeah there are no public records at all that can be accessed? I thought you could find out about anybody via the internet as long as you pay for it.

Indiana (the state I live in) has a public records website (http://www.stategovrecords.com). I'd be shocked if New York didn't have something similar.

I know there are more internet sites who track people down for a small fee. I think they can even get credit reports. But I'm not a stalker so I don't have the full info....but I'm sure somebody around here is...

I must say West Cockup is a wonderful town...although, sadly I haven't been there in quite a while...yes quite a while indeed. I think soon I'll be paying Cockup a visit...and make it an extended stay.

Pleco, glad to hear you found the site useful. It's certainly more comprehensive than other sites I've seen. In my experience, I've never used any of the paid services they offer.
