I refuse to watch Trek remastered

My paranoia is based, justifiabley I think, on 50 years of being fucked over by the corporate entities that control the things I like, and take them away at random, arbitrary intervals.

Did Paramount stormtroopers break into your house and defile (or at least forcibly remove) your personal DVD collection?

Or are you talking about a corporation exercising its rightful control over a property that it owns, into which it has invested hundreds of millions of dollars over the past few decades?

He's talking about the corporate attutude and how it often does dumbass things to gain more profit while ruining what you enjoyed from it.

Did any of you take High School English?

Forbin, where Paramount did a Janet Reno on his ass at a young age. And now, he's jaded. Never again will he find comfort in his DVDs knowing that - somewhere - the Paramount Gestapo will come and raid his house! :P

Trying to push another sage over the edge is getting a bit boring, Vance. Try death threats or legal action.

I like Forbin, and I'm pretty sure that he knows I was joking. You, however, don't have that excuse.

It's always been fun to watch projects like this turn vast swaths of a generally liberal sci-fi fanbase into the most rabidly pro-corporate people you've ever seen. :)

Forbin, you are, as always, spot on.

Like you joked with aridas.

I have yet to see one mature thing from you on this or any other board.

Then I suggest you put me on ignore and have done with it. No one else here in interested in this all-too-personal fued which is entirely off topic.

It would have to be you. I can't any more. :(

C'mon guys, this isn't worth all the hard feelings that are being generated. I'm not saying we should all hold hands and sing Kumbaya, but maybe we could just agree to disagree and move on.

That sounds like a good idea to me. :)

Glad you told me you were kidding, Vance, I wasn't sure. I'll take your word for it. :)

Dan - we usually grok.

Maybe some of y'all haven't lived long enough to have things you like disappear, break without available replacement, or be screwed with. I'll be 50 in June. There are a LOT of things I liked that aren't around any more. Some are because the makers deemed them unprofitable, fair enough. Some seem to have been at their total whim. Some are because some asshole did something that ruined it for the rest of us.

You'll see.

Look at Star Wars as an example. George Lucas sold the original trilogy in theaters and VHS. Then he "updated" it, and sold that version as a film and VHS. THEN he sold only the updated version on DVD. THEN he waited a couple years, and now you can get the original theatrical cuts on DVD as well. He sold the same product six times.

From a money standpoint, Paramount would be very smart continue to sell multiple "editions" of the same show. We may whine about it, but most of us will end up owning both the unaltered and altered editions of the same TV show.

Sorry to jump in, but the original Star Wars is not a good example to support your point. When the original versions came out on DVD last year, they were universally panned as being of inferior quality. They were not anamorphic, had not been remastered, and did not have DD5.1 soundtracks. Lucas apparently just dumped the old laserdisc masters onto DVDs.

Closer to home, it's already been noted that the original version of TMP is not available on DVD, and the original mono soundtracks of the ST episodes are not available (I think I'm right about that - we have DD5.1 and DD stereo in the box sets, am I right?). We don't have the trailers for any of the other series on DVD.

I'm skeptical that Paramount will offer the unaltered episodes in HD, despite what they're saying now. I hope I'm wrong.

Sure, but you forget that TOS trailers were a bonus sweetener to encourage not-yet-TOS fans, and all those TOS collectors who already owned the US DVD twin-packs, to collect TOS boxed season sets. TNG and DS9 boxed sets didn't need the sweetener. How many other 40 year old TV shows on DVD come with the old trailers? How many modern day shows come with all trailers intact?

Also, it's my understanding that there is no one standard trailer for each TNG and DS9 episode; syndication networks created their own variations - different lengths, different wording, different voiceover people, etc.

TOS trailers were actually attached to the end of TOS film reels. They were part of the original show. TNG and DS9 trailer footage was downloaded to stations via satellite feed and doctored as each station saw fit.

If you like it, continue to watch. If you don't like it, at least you gave it a chance. It wasn't your thing, but at least you didn't base your opinion on ignorance or on the opinions of others.

I couldn't have said it better myself. I'll just add that I'm sure that there are people out there that won't watch it on principle. I'm not one of those people, but I understand where they are coming from. Myself, I watched and it wasn't my bag. To each his own.

Luckily those at CBS-Paramount had the forethought to preserve a HD viewable version of TOS for future generations, so TOS won't pass into history unwatched by those who will not want to watch inferior (to them) copies. At least they recognized it was a valuable property worth keeping on many levels. Not sure anyone is out there chomping at the bit to convert Gilligan's Island to HD.

Yes and there are still people out there who won't watch color TV on principle too...and back in the day, sound...

I think you are confusing format for content.

No, it has more to do with having an open mind, in this case about technology and intent of the enhanced episodes. Principles can be a good thing, but like anything else, has positives and negatives.
