I read the first IDW Star Trek Ongoing

...and was not impressed. It was the one which recreated the very first Star Trek episode. Should I keep reading these? Do they get better? I guess I was hoping they'd use the episodes to springboard new ideas and interpretations, not just retread them. I love the idea of it but I just wasn't excited by #1.

I did, however, read the free 'Spotlight: Borg' comic and was kind of impressed with it. I don't know if I understood it (Picard saved the universe by, uh, picking up a girl? What?) but I thought it served as a nice prequel to Destiny (I know this wasn't the intent of it) and the art was cool and such.

Any other comic recommendations, now that I have the app?

i'd say issues 5 and 6 are an improvement, they actually did new things with the episode operation anniliate. the next issue, number 7, will be the first of a two parter with all-new original material.

I've enjoyed them so far, just picked up #6 yesterday. I agree each one has gotten better as they've gone along, looking forward to the Vulcan two parter.

I've read the first three issues of John Bryne's Romulan story arc (Alien Spotlight: Romulans, Romulans: The Hollow Crown 1 & 2) and really enjoyed them. There's a three part miniseries, Romulans: Schism, that ties up the storyline that I haven't read yet. I've also read and enjoyed Alien Spotlight: Gorn, Andorians, Vulcans, Orions, Klingons and Tribbles, and Assignment: Earth #1 (and Klingons Blood Will Tell #1 but I don't know that's available in e-form) and I really enjoyed them too. There's also a New Frontier miniseries that might be worth checking out if you're a fan of the novels. I've read one or two issues of The Enterprise Experiment, Intelligence Gathering, and Mirror Images but I never finished the arcs so I don't feel comfortable recommending them.

What should had been done differently.

The dialogue is so sparse I think my five year old could knock it out in five minutes. The episodes should've been spread across three issues each...

My expectation was that the first part of each two-parter might have been almost-but-not-quite-like the original scripts, ending in a cliffhanger nothing at all like we'd anticipate, and followed by a wholly-different Part 2.

However, the first two IDW two-parters have been quite similar to the way TOS unfolded (but with a few very cool potential easter eggs for the next movie). I guess each one has been more ambitious than the last ("Operation: Annihilate!" works rather well), but I'm really looking forward to #7-8, which will be an all-new adventure!

No, sparse dialogue is actually very hard to write. Get your five-year-old to try it.

Nah, two parts are just enough. As I said, though, the climaxes of each Part 2 should have been more surprising.
