I read a novel in a day!

I haven't read a Trek story for quite a few years- I kept randomly choosing really boring ones and was put off. I finally got round to reading book 1 of the Destiny Trilogy.

WOW! I had forgotten how much fun it could be reading about the adventures. It helped that was one of the best Trek stories I have read and was so clever at tying in lots of different eras. I need to go back and read some of the earlier novels that this book hints at.

I can't believe I read the whole thing in a day. I have never done that before, it testament to the captivating storyline. I got more pleasure reading than going to see a new movie. Maybe because Insurrection and Nemesis weren't amazing and I'd got bored of the TNG movie franchise. Plus the characters are not written in the films like they were in the series.

I can't wait to read the other 2 books when I get some free time.

Which elements of the series are you curious about? I'm pretty most of the board would be happy to help you out with recommendations.

I wish I had the amount of free time in one day that I'd need to read an entire novel.

Actually I have nothing on my agenda for tomorrow, but between internet time-wastage and hopefully going for a five mile walk or so, I'll hopefully still be a little low on time.

I long for the days when I could devote that much time to reading. I recall in 7th grade a friend gave me the LOTR trilogy to read. I started it on Friday after school, read all weekend and gave him the books back Monday morning. He was a bit stunned I had devoured the whole thing in just over two days.

I can't say anything because I did the same thing when I first picked up Book I. I also did the same with II and III.

My first try at LotR came to a screeching halt shorty after Shelob. I just put it down and never picked it up again. And it had taken me a long time to make it that far. I did that between the theatrical releases of TTT and RotK too, so apparently even really wanting to know what would happen next wasn't good enough for me.

My second pass went much better...brought it into work and read in short, controlled bursts during my lunch-breaks.

I admit I skimmed the appendices. :)

I did the same thing over President's Day weekend the year after The Two Towers was released. A few months later, I finally broken down and read the Harry Potter series (then books 1-4), in about a week of evenings after school. That was a wonderful year for books for me; I also read the Ender's Game series and the first eight books of the Deep Space Nine relaunch, and found my own copy of The Romulan Way.

Congratulations, S3CT1ON31. I hope you enjoy the rest of the trilogy.

I'm glad I'm not the only one who devoured this in a day. I did feel like a freak afterwards for wasting a whole day. Even though it wasn't "wasted". Quite the opposite.

JD the elements I like are Federation politics, interesting sci fi technologies, character development. I hate reading stories where the planet below is in some civil war/ political struggle and the crew get imbroiled zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz.

The worst novel I read was Ghost Ship. Man that was boring. It nearly put me off reading for life. That a publisher OKed it in the first place Sheesh.

Here's what I liked of the ones I have read. War Drums- I used this to do an english essay on racism when we were asked to read a book. Didn't go down to well with my class mates lol.

The Romulan Prize. This was a lot of fun to read. It just flowed through with something important happening ever page. Compared to something like the novelization of Descent which had extra bits written to extend it that did nothing for me- like having Troi and Crusher sat knitting. WTF lol?

Vendetta was a brilliant story. I wonder how well it would hold up on a re reading. I was a little disappointed the Borg drone didn't gain her humanity but in some ways it made more sense than Hugh or 7 of 9

Imzadi was just fantastic. The writer really knew Troi and Riker's character. I think Troi was written better in some novels than on screen.

The Devil's Heart was a tough cookie to get through. It ended up ok but I remember thinking all the subplots were uninteresting and slowed the story.

I got up to half way through genesis wave book 3 and gave up. The 3rd was lacklustre to say the least. I enjoyed the 1st 2. But after reading the 3rd I didn't care what happened. Necheyev was great in this series, we got to see her in a new light.

Q in law was hilarious.

Voyager: The black shore was a really good read. I remember thinking that the author was incredibly knowledgeable about the workings of ship. And I especially liked the way Banana Torres was written.

Dreadnought was the first TOS novel I read. I loved how it was written from a non main cast members point of view. The story of conspiracy and mutiny was really well done.

The Pandora Principle was epic!. Even though it didn't have much of Kirk in it it was a really enjoyable story and I loved Saavik even more after this.

I tried reading Worlds of Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, Volume 1 - Cardassia but it sent me to sleep and gave up.

I've easily been able to read through a book in a few hours. Lately, i've been reading the TNG books in chronological order. In the last 4 days, I've burned through "The Captain's Honor", "Strike Zone" and "Power Hungry." I'm in this zone with TNG where i just devour the books. That, and the books are only 250 or so pages long. And my weekends are usually free for me to just kick back and read. The week days are a different story. I'm usually too busy and usually only read 50 pages a night.

Thanks! Glad you liked it. Funny you mentioned Torres. I actually read an interview with Roxann Dawson when I was writing that book, in which she complained that Torres seldom had any scenes with Kes, and that we rarely saw those two characters interacting. Which is what gave me the idea to pair them up in the last half of the book!

So am I. :wtf: I spent three weeks with the first book in the trilogy before giving up.

Its better than being called Bacon Lettuce and Tomato

Wow we have actual published writers on here! Thats cool.

I think I read that whole trilogy in 4 days or so. I'll have to check. I had the hardest time putting it down.

If you like politics you should check out the A Time To... series of TNG books. The last three are amazing (IMO) and set of alot of the stuff that eventually lead into Destiny. They also lead up to Trek Lit's most political book ever, The Article of the Federation, which is one of my favorite books.

Had you read any of the other DS9 Relaunch books before you read WoDS9: Cardassia?

Thanks JD I will. I just finished book 2 which I started last night. Still a thrill ride.

No I don't think I've read any DS9 novels. Weird really since DS9 is my fave show. I suppose its the fact that TNG, Titan, New Frontier, Voyager are exploration stories whereas DS9 is on a station. I know that's a silly argument lot of trkkers used not to watch the show but I haven't liked any of the synopses of DS9 books. I'd like to be pleasantly surprised.

I think its much easier reading novels on electronic device then thumbing through books which is why I finally got round to reading again.

You might try reading the DS9 relaunch from the beginning. Look for "Twist Of Faith"; it collects the first four novels & one novella in the series. That might make the Worlds Of DS9 stories more interesting when you get to them, because they're all part of the same highly serialized narrative.

http://memory-beta.wikia.com/wiki/DS9_relaunch has the full list. Don't read the cast description if you want to avoid spoilers.

Thanks Thrawn I'll look into them after destiny.

When did the stories start to become all set within continuity so they didn't contradict each other like early novels often did? I don't know how someone about to have a story published would know what's happening in a novel after them. Does someone at the publisher have a job to check this?
