I preferred the Prime timeline.

Anyway, I'm beginning to see a pattern where "It's the Kelvin Timeline!" is basically becoming another way of saying, "I think this sucks! It'll never be real Star Trek!" It looks to me like it's a new, emerging type of short-hand for bashers to describe all Star Trek made from 2009 on, whether it happens to actually be set in the Kelvin Timeline or not. It's amazing, all these "Bad Robot" productions that Bad Robot has nothing to do with.

Aw, come on, Garth! Don’t you know Bad Robot is out to purposefully destroy everything you enjoyed from your youth?

We don’t know if it is addressed or not. We’ve seen two minutes of clips from a 400+ minute story.

Shhhhhh.....

Michael Bay already beat them to the punch. ;)

Transformers, Ninja Turtles... how Thundercats managed to escape, I don't know. :p

That seems to sum it up.

I love it how people think that fictional characters have to remain exactly the same when years even decades go by since the last time we saw them. It’s been eighteen years since we last saw Seven. Are you exactly the same as you were eighteen years ago?

I might venture an affirmative answer on this question for some people.

Really. That would be awesome. But, from what I can see, their uniforms are dark blue, not like the ones in TOS and the Cage. If they were set within this time frame, then their uniforms should be consistent. I'm very hard line on canon, but maybe there's no longer canon.

If you're hardline on canon*, you should have given up on Star Trek a LONG time ago.

*assuming you mean "continuity"

I still can't wrap my head around how "canon" came to mean "visual continuity" in Star Trek, especially how it came to mean a subset of fans claiming the responsibility to police a franchise and its creators on strict adherence to 50-year-old design choices before anything else. Star Trek is and has always been mainly a product of its time, and it's preposterous to expect a work shot in 2019 to look and feel exactly the same as another one from 1966.

For me, it's the same story, it just looks different. I never felt the need to resort to mental gymnastics about alternate timelines to justify why it looks different. It's a TV franchise, not an historical documentary.

Canonical = Everything we see in a movie or TV episode under a specific brand is real and happened and accurate.

Noncanonical = Everything we read in magazines, novels or comics, or see in behind the scenes or cast/crew interviews, or fanfilms, or wacky fan speculation conspiracies in forums and news letters, under the same brand as above, is unreal, didn't happen and inaccurate.

Hmmm.

Discovery is a webseries.

Canon or non-canon?

Somehow, due to heavy TNG bias, I don't think the same will be asked by most people about Picard, unless they happen to think it's an extension of Discovery.

Anyway, the nature of TV is evolving. Web Series Originals are the future. Network TV will have a severely diminished presence without Baby Boomers. The main networks will have to have streaming services like CBS All Access in order to survive in that eventual landscape.

Star Trek Discovery is "probably" a canon webseries.

Star Trek New Voyages is a noncanon webseries.

Star Trek Discovery has "also" aired on terrestrial TV.

Star Trek Discovery is a canon TV Series.

Does Netflix canonize Media, or is any media, any Star Trek media specifically, on Netflix noncanon until it airs on terrestrial TV later in it's lifeline?

Discovery runs long.

Discovery will be cut for terrestrial release, maybe sometimes?

What's canon?

The original full episode on the web or the cut episode on TV?

Are we still doing that? Yeah, it's canon, and season 2 even proved (arguably, but at least they tried very very hard to) that it's in Prime.

I was watching a farewell to orange is the New black this morning on youtube, where the cast was talking about their first days..."My mom was super pissed that she had to pay the internet 7 dollars a month to watch me in a webseries, and who the hell is going to watching us any way?"

No one considers Netflix Originals to be webisodes any more, if they ever did, but I found it amazing to see how new media disrupts the agreed upon ancient rules of canon.

Sorry for being late to the party.

Discovery is licensed officially to Netflix and produced and released by the franchise owner.
Doesn’t get more canon to that.

Since the owner of said franchise says it’s in continuity, that’s also official.

If your own head claims something different for your own enjoyment, then you have the right to, but can’t claim authority over what others, including but not limited to the franchise owner considers canon/continuity or what to do with it next.
