I loved this film but I waited and waited and waited and what I expected did not eventuate. As the credits rolled my head just about exploded asking..

"WHERE IS MY GOD DAMN RESET BUTTON?!?!"

Really.. I expected a reset via the black hole thingie.

Will the next film be all about how they reset history?

I thought it was obvious that the whole alternate universe idea was introduced to allowed them to do new stories without having to conform to whats going to happen to the TOS crew in the prime timeline.

Pardon me "StCoop" but I have remained spoiler free for this film. I have not sucked down and digested the whole concept of a permanent alternate timeline being the future of Trek. Yes I did hear that there would be time travel and an alternate timeline but after watching 726 episodes in 6 series and 10 films I think the concept that time travel eventually compels our heroes to seek a reset was a fair conclusion to make, especially during the last half hour of ST:XI. Little hints like Kirk being told his father would live to see him become captain of the Enterprise did their bit towards this assumption as well.

I have no problem with alternate timelines. I enjoyed the Treklit books based on that. It was however a shock not to have a reset take place or be hinted at in the future.

This is kinda funny. Having seen the premiere at the Opera House a month ago, the biggest thing I've been waiting to see is the reaction to this. I commend Bob Orci etc as they have truly listened to fans in this case. Every single time the reset button was used a large portion of fans would consistently be vocal about how it voids the whole experience. Well, in this case the writers took this to heart and had the guts to go right ahead and blow the crap out of Vulcan. It's completely un-Trek like in the approach, but lets face it: this is exactly what most have looked for in Trek. A fresh approach that shakes up the formula a bit while still remaining true to the general feel. I have a few gripes with the film in general, but this is not one of them. I certainly had a WTF moment, but I'm OK with it.

Yes porthos4Captain, that is why I titled this thread "I never thought I would say this" because I've also bemoaned the over usage of the reset button. But I was screaming for one at the end of the film!! LOL.. well it was an interesting experience to say the least.

Guess T'Pring is probably dead? Does this mean we can look fwd to some hot Uhura / Spock cultural sexual tensions?

I was kinda waiting for the Enterprise to be sucked into the black hole at the end and everything being "reset" as a result...and it didn't happen. What a good move.

I agree. I actually did expect some kind of reset, too. (Temporal Cold War anyone? "Everything has all been reset back the way it was, and nobody remembers any of it.)

I have to admit, though, I did really want to seen Pike in command of the Enterprise, with Spock and Number 1 before Kirk took it over later.

I've been a reflexive defender of this new film ever since I started reading about it, but I do remember feeling queasy when Vulcan blew up. However, even when I watched "Parallels," "Yesterday's Enterprise," and "All Good Things," I remember thinking, "What makes these stories any less valid than the one I know?" I know in "Parallels" those universes continue, but sometimes I wanted to go along with them.

I suppose for me Star Trek is bigger than one universe, that there are different possibilities to explore that couldn't be told without looking at events through a different prism.

It made more sense to go back to the beginning than to project even further into a remote future that's already populated with video games, Voy and Ent episodes, and Berlinghoff Rasmussen.

Economically it makes more sense too.

I think it means anything is fair play. Star Trek has always felt fairly safe because it was episodic. Changes would occur, but never on a grand scale (even DS9 didn't mix things up to this extent). In that way I find the film to be reminiscent of Serenity where the threat of upheaval was real and had lasting effects. I think it's great for storytelling in that regardless of what we know the crew may encounter in future adventures (Khan, Doomsday Machine etc), we can't be certain of what the outcomes will be. Main characters could die and planets/ships could be destroyed. That uncertainty will raise the stakes and IMHO should make things a little more interesting for established fans. The amount of talk these changes is already generating is just a sign of how the ideas have re-invigorated the fan-base whether the fans are in support of the changes or not.

I'm just throwing this in here because we probably don't need another thread on canon or resetting the timeline. So here goes.

I have not seen the movie but it obviously involves the changing of certain events that we have come to accept. My question is....can "our" timeline just fall back into place naturally?

ex: I'm on my to Grandmas house traveling the same route I have always taken. I've taken this route hundreds of times and know it like the back of my hand. However, on this particular trip I am forced to swerve off the highway to avoid an accident. I go careening down over the berm, into brush running over debris and what not and end up having to go thru a cornfield but then I end up right back on my highway. And aside from that "detour" I am still right on schedule for Grandma's house. No time lost, and I still get to see Grandma.

Could this happen with Treks timeline? Nero is just a hiccup in traditional Trek lore.

The changes are pretty big, so I don't think that would work. Certain things do seem to have been "course corrected" back to the way things happened in the original timeline, but overall the changes are too big. It's not just a hiccup.

new timeline. same characters. different story. but i imagine new stuff will continue to be produced for the original timeline for a long time to come (e.g. comics, MMORPG, novels, fan films).

That was the thing I loved the most about the film (apart from the cool character moments and the action scenes, the music, and Nero's social manners)!!!!! No deus ex machina!
