I need to get rid of stuff!

Look into prices for self storage, it can get pricey. Just so you can figure out if something is worth storing vs selling. I've been decluttering for the move to CA next month, and it's so stressful.

Ah! Missed this comment yesterday when I checked the thread.

That is a good point to consider. Especially here in Atlanta, where we have the largest foreclosure rate in the country. I would imagine a lot of people who owned huge homes and lost them have scaled back to small homes (which is what I have) or even apartments...and all that 'stuff' has gonna go somewhere! I bet storage space is at a premium.

Kestra, where do you live now...and why are you moving? I think I read it somewhere, but I can't recall the details (my memory sucks).

Those storage places are indeed not cheap. Wanted to do that too, but found it to expensive. Will put most of my stuff into a garage now, that is at my grandma house and not needed as she has no car anymore...hm... though hope my things will survive the winter in there. (?)

Do you move to a different continent PKTrekgirl?

Sounds like, similar to myself, you have stuff that you would prefer keep in some sort of climate controlled environment... In my case, it's really the humidity in the South that I think would do the most damage in a non-climate controlled space. Temps here range from the 30's in winter to the high 90's in summer - combine that with humidity and it can't be very good for most personal possessions - especially things like clothing, books, good art, etc. I think mildew could become a problem. And the heat alone in summer couldn't do DVDs/CDs very much good. I don't know where you live, TerokNor...but I think if I leave anything in the South (which I will have to do, at least temporarily, due to monetary constraints, as this will be an extremely expensive move), it will almost certainly have to be in a climate controlled space. :(

And no...I'm not moving to another continent. But I may as well be: Atlanta, Georgia back to Anchorage, Alaska (which is where I moved here from). I haven't decided for sure yet...but it's looking more and more probable every day, due to a number of factors.

Where are you moving from/to?

Every year I go through clothes, shoes, books, games, etc. I round up all the crap I don't need and drop it off at the Salvation Army or someplace similar. Keeps the level of clutter low.

Stuff is the domestic equivalent of fat. Sit around for too long, and you get accumulate fat. Live in one place for too long, and you accumulate stuff. In both cases, moving around eventually becomes difficult.

:techman: So true!

Good idea. I do pretty much the same thing, though not on the regular schedule that you describe.

Typical. Pereant qui ante nos nostra dixerunt.

Yes, to the extent that it appears that someone else even said that already! :D

Who is the quote by, anyway? Sounds sardonic enough to be Suetonius but I really have no idea.

Hubby and I are going to a Disney show in 2 weeks in Anaheim (and hopefully go to Club 33), so I'm hoping to meet some collectors there.
I'm afraid Club 33 is invite only. You'd need extremely good connections to get in there.
I have a friend who is a Disney-addict. His tiny appartment is already full, though, but he might perhaps know someone else who's as big a fan and who would like a few things. I shall point him to this thread.

We’ve been there a number of times, 8 or 9 times, I think. TBH, I’ve lost count and didn’t keep the one-day passes they give you for the day. We even went on our wedding day with our cake made by the Disneyland bakery (and I have the receipt)! A friend of a former-former-co-worker arranged all of that. If they were taking names for the membership wait list, I’d be adding mine. Hell, I’d pay the money from savings as my big splurge in life and join!

This time, there was a mix-up on a purchase of something and the person felt so bad and appreciated our understanding that she contacted her Club 33 contact and arranged this. Since we were going for the Disney show anyway, the timing is perfect. But you never know for sure until that day.

Rhubarbodendron, find out what your friend collects (pins, buttons, paper stuff, toys, etc) and as I go through things, I’ll see if there’s an overlap. I’ll let you know and you can find out if he’s interested in adding to his collection.

We had a storage space, all nice and tidy. Then we got a house with a basement (finished, clean, and dry) and decided to save the money. But as a poster noted, this is “fat” and I’d rather have a basement. Or most of a basement.

I opened another box to take pics for future reference. All these cool toys and plastic glasses from McDonald’s and Burger King. Mostly Toy Story, the original movie, stuff. Somewhere in that basement is a box with a set of Burger King Star Trek “glass" glasses. I think there was another set down there, too, from the next movie.

I did find a box full of plushes. All clean and in plastic bags. I kept (for now) the four that mean the most and are offering the rest to a co-worker for her kid. Sad to see some of them go knowing they’re going to get dirty and worn, but what am I going to do with them ... have them just sit in a box in the basement another 10 years? Anything not selected goes to the local children’s hospital.

Yeah, i was pretty amazed myself. But disappointed that they didnt sell for more. My GF use to get upwards of $75 for her used, worn shoes.

At the time i had posted the auction on my facebook page and we all watched daily in disbelief....some of my friends were incredibly grossed and creeped out. I didn't really care. I figure everyone has their "thing" and if someone gets off on old shoes, no one is getting hurt, so what the hell.

I CAN tell you i now look for old ratty shoes when i hit the yard sales......

Ah, your running commentary of that eBay auction was priceless. You should tell these good folks about some of the messages you received from interested parties...

My husband and I are also attempting to declutter. We're both pack rats and there's far too much stuff in our house. Also, we're having major renovations done and at some point every room will have to be emptied (not at the same time, thank heavens!), so we're getting rid of as much stuff as possible before then. We're lucky in that we get a lot of charity bags through our letterbox, and since these are collected from our doorstep it saves us from lugging those bags to the charity shops themselves. The local charity shops are also receiving a lot of stuff from us. I've used Freecycle when I lived elsewhere, but the local Freecycle group seems to attract creeps and weirdos, so I don't use it.

I'm in the process of selling some of my craft stuff on eBay, and was stunned last week when what I thought was a simple magazine-like book of knitted toy patterns sold for £43. Turns out it's quite a collector's item, so I was a happy girl. Hopefully you'll have that kind of luck with some of your items, too. :)
