I miss the old days...

Garm Bel Iblis

Commodore
As i get older, I am becoming more and more nostalgic for the past. I miss the Galaxy-Class USS Enterprise and her command crew, I miss DS9 and her orignal crew.

Most of the "in series" novels were written while the series' were on the air, so a lot of things contradicted and were erased by future episodes.

I think now, so many years after the series ended it would be grand to go back and revisit the good ole days on the "D" and DS9 during the series run where everyone was where they were meant to be. I'm all for pushing forward, but our characters are getting old and the entire Treklit franchise is starting to feel like the EU of Star Wars.

Me too. I'd love to see some new Trek lit set during the runs of the shows, now that we have the hindsight to know how they eventually played out.

I'm with you on this. Get back to the basics and write about the characters and the ships that we know and love. :techman:

I have to say that I wouldn't mind having some TV era novels *alongside* the current conyinuity ones.

We have had some TV era novels in recent years (String Theory trilogy in VOY, Hollow Men in DS9, Do Comets Dream in TNG come to mind), so it's not as if the "old days" are gone -- not to mention TNG and DS9 comics which are currently set at their respective TV runs.

Last, I think that each new novel (and most of the newer ones do that IIRC), should have a Historian's Note blurb at the beginning, containing chronological information, and episodes/movies/novels set around that time - that way, readers can place novels with ease, and choose their favorite era.

I still haven't fulfilled my personal goal of writing a good, old-fashioned TOS/5-year mission era novel. Danced all around it, but that one still eludes me. :)

I really get what you're all saying, but I love the idea of a universe with consequences and no reset switch.

It not like there arn't hundreds of TOS, TNG, DS9, VOY and a couple of ENT books set during the series', and should the STXI line ever be released they'll follow the same rules the old lot did. In fact the recent TOS novel did, too.

And although contradicted, I don't consider the old books 'erased' (or 'worthless', if that was implied) at all. But IMO continuity and canon aren't as inflexable as some others believe. Some of the old stuff is reused nowadays (like the Kinshaya) even after the book that begat them has been "proven" "all wrong" by subsequent canon.

doesn't Vanguard count? :)

this also brings back fond memories of In the Name of Honor :)

^ Vanguard counts as "dancing around it." I'm talking about Kirk and Company, on the Enterprise. I've managed (with Kevin) a short story and a novella, but not the whole enchilada. Maybe one of these days. :)

Would love to see that. As much fun as the new continuity along several novel lines has been, it's a lot of fun to get a novel that just has a good romp with the old TOS crew, on the original Enterprise. Strange new world, story that is self-contained and wrapped up in a single book. A throwback to the old numbered TOS books :)

Pitch something and get it moving! :techman:

I Definitely would like to see more novels like Ds9 written during the the run of it's seven seasons. I also think Enterprise has alot of untold stories as well it would be nice to see some novels take place during the four seasons too.

I agree, would especially love some more traditional TNG and VOY novels. Probably isn't as commercial to do now though.

Yeah, I wouldn't mind seeing that every once in a while. Maybe an anthology once or twice a year or something. Like the volumes that came out for the various series' anniversaries...

If you are wanting a feel for the old days, you could check out the anthologies that have been released in the last few years: Star Trek: The Next Generation "The Sky's the Limit," "Star Trek: Deep Space Nine "Prophecy and Change," and Star Trek: Voyager "Distant Shores."
All these are set during each of the tv series' run. And good stuff. I'm currently re-reading them.

^ Picked up Prophecy and Change (but never got around to reading it), and want to pick up the others. Plus the TOS one, Constellations (I think that's what it's called...)

Not to mention "Star Trek: Seven Deadly Sins."

But reading is hard :bolian:

(finished it a week ago)

I've always figured that if you guys did a "five-year mission" novel, it would be in the TAS period rather than TOS.
