I made it through Sub Rosa

1st time to watch it

Not boring...um....kinda of cheesy somewhat beyond any cheese TOS made.
Antithesis of Yesterday's Enterprise.
Thankfully, Lower Decks comes up next
I was too embarrassed watching this as a child, I just remember…

the sex scene

Traumatised me.

Come on, now! Surely that exciting talk of the caber toss being wrecked thanks to the malfunctioning weather control unit is surely taut, gripping stuff?

Seriously, the following presentation is not my doing, but it's by far the best review of "Sub Rosa" you will ever see and I've seen this about 4x more times than I've sat through the episode...

I'll take Sub Rosa over Shades of Gray. Hell, generally speaking, I'll take ANY "original" episode - no matter how subpar - over a clip (i.e., flashback) show/episode; the only exception to this rule is an episode composed of entirely new flashbacks.

This was where I feel like the show's producers were like, "We're getting cancelled a few episodes from now, so let's just get CRAZY and see if they'd dare to cancel us before the season's even over!"

It seemed like the kind of thing the Great Bird himself would have come up with.

Kor

That made me laugh. I know this episode gets tons of hate, but I've always kind of liked it. I like the Scottish setting on a distant planet, and to be perfectly honest, I like Dr. Crusher getting a bit of her freak on in this episode. I'm a terrible human being.

I'm considering giving this one a spin on my random TNG watch. I know it's widely hated, but I have little memory of it.

Oh it's totally cheesy, but I love it for a change of pace. And I just love anything vaguely gothic. And even though very poor executed, and borderline racist, it tried to show a view of humans off world which I appreciated.

I bracket it with Emergence. Utterly bizarre, but I like its attempt.

I was a teenager. Traumatized is not the word I'd use...

I saw "Sub Rosa" for the first time a couple of years ago. I was a young child when it was first on and I think my parents must have convinced me that Star Trek wasn't on that week.

It's hilarious. From the story being ridiculous to the "Scottish" characters claim rain would stop the caber toss contest from happening - the Scots I've met are made of much sterner stuff than that. And it works as an episode because the actors did a really good job.

Maybe like Patrick Stewart did when he did "Masterminds".

Never seen that one.

But I would imagine that agreeing to appear in a specific outing (in this case a film that he separately signed a contract to act in, and I assume he had at least seen a rough outline of the script beforehand), is different from having to play in an atrocious episode you didn't explicitly agree to, even if you agreed to appearing in the series as a whole, long before that specific episode was written. I wonder what happens if an actor/actress actually refuses to play a script in such a situation ("I am not going to have sex with a lamp, I never signed for that!").

I watched Sub Rosa for the first time since it originally aired during a re-watch I concluded a few months ago.

It wasn't as bad as I remembered, but it was still really bad. It is a gorgeous, unique looking episode, though.

It's a teeny bopper movie, fairly cheesy but sort of fun if you don't think about it too hard. Classic "misunderstood teen rebel saves the day" fare. Patrick Stewart is the bad guy, and I get the sense that he knows he's making a Razzie level movie and has decided to just roll with it.

I know if I colonized a planet, the very first thing I'd do is get rid of most of the tech and build medieval-style castles everywhere. Also, I'm going to check Amazon today to see if I can get one of those 'Forever Candles'. Its probably in their Unobtainium section. At least we didn't get treated to another episode of Crusher and Troi in their sexy, circa-1980's workout leotards. Sadly, Crusher episodes seem all about her falling for the wrong 'men'.

Oh, and if you enjoyed this episode, you should watch the 1982 movie The Entity, which was basically two hours of ghost rape. Sadly, the special effects were done VERY well for their time - they left no flesh ungroped (by invisible hands). Described, BTW, as 'childlike hands'. It was 1982, my friends and I who had gone to see it were teens, and we were all pretty high... and we still walked out of the theater saying, "WTF did we just watch?" We went to see a ghost movie and got 2 hours of some fetish porn. Somehow they managed to make 1980's teens 'feel dirty' about something afterwards (we had NO shame folks LOL).
