I don’t know about anyone else but I’m loving the current atmosphere. We Trek fans are on fire with activity. I haven’t seen so many warnings get handed out in I don’t know how long. So far we seem to be split into three camps:

Camp 1 – We love everything we’ve seen so far and are so excited we’re orgasming every few minutes.

Camp 2 – Not sure, feel uncomfortable, willing to give it a chance but we’ll keep an eye on you JJ!

Camp 3 – We hate you JJ!!! You killed our childhood, we will never forgive you!!!! …but we’ll see your movie.

Names are being thrown around like a joint KKK/Black Panthers picnic/family reunion. We are speculating more than possibly ever before which is saying something for a franchise that is 40 years old.

It’s times like this we see what we are really make of. Any government on planet Earth would be lucky to have us on their analysis team because it seems we are the absolute masters at dissecting information apart like non whom have ever come before us.

More lurkers that ever before are coming out of the woodwork to throw in their 2 cents, mods must keep a constant vigil for bootleg material we constantly throw up, flame thrower attacks and suicide attempts!

I don’t know about all of you my fellow Trek fans but I am loving it!

Soooo true. :guffaw:

They seem to have some romanticized, idealized notion that everything before this movie was perfect and amazing, and that any change to that is intolerable. Sheesh. Even TOS wasn't internally consistent.

..yet they're still here and I know they'll all go see this movie in theatres, or at least rent the DVD. Then they`ll be back here, bitching about it. Its what they do.

I think they had fewer arguments about canon when they put together the frickin Bible!

While I was only knee-high to a hobbit at the time, I've heard the same thing was going on between the announcement of TNG and the build-up to it.

Not quit the same thing. There was no Internet, hi-res screen capturing, cell phone bootleg trailers... it's a bit faster now, and I was like 10 at the time. :shifty:

Exactly. We had a convention - with Bjo Trimble, fresh from her set visits to "Encounter at Farpoint" - and she attempted to defend TNG all weekend, but many fans were so angry that someone - in fact Gene Roddenberry himself, along with Fontana, Gerrold, Justman, Black and Theiss - had dared to challenge TOS with a new entertainment contender. The angry fans were refusing to be open-minded on the possibility that there would at least be elements of TNG they'd enjoy.

She said, "What do you like better, apples or oranges? Who do you love better, your mother or your father?" Her message was that it was okay to be open to appreciate both.

All this proves is that Samuel T. Cogley was right.

See what you've done?
See what I had to do?
Yeah. :p

I am definitely in Camp TWO.

Anybody got Section 31's number handy?;)

And with The Next Gen comparison (is it grammatically okay around here to say 'the TNG' even though that would make it 'the The Next Gen'?)...I dunno, it doesn't have the exact same merit.

What we're being presented with this time is a movie which creatively (at any level) does not include any member of any previous incarnation of Trek.

Unless Nimoy's got some major input we don't know about...this movie has nobody familiar with the ins and outs of any Trek production ever. Big difference.

It doesn't have to be, no.

Just pointing out why it's a bit more worrisome.

Also, TNG didn't set out to specifically replace the exact characters of what had come before. It's different this time than that is what my post was trying to say.

I'm probably in between 1 and 2. I have a few minor things (but c'mon, that's like anyone with any movie) but I'm looking forward to it.

I for one was ridiculously skeptical during the build-up to TNG and even for the first half-season or so. I was talking shit to my friend on the phone every commercial during the entire first episode. You should have seen me explode when I realized they were ripping off a TOS ep for the second one.

I've grown up since then. Now I'm just happy that anything new called Star Trek is coming out.

Also: knee-high to a hobbit would mean you were a fetus. Those hobbits... they're really short.

I'm in camp 2 (uncomfortable but willing to give it a chance). I really would like to be able to enjoy this movie. Several things I've seen make me uneasy (not least of which is the bridge, which just makes no sense to me. The white/blue color scheme is fine, but all the clutter, and the ridiculous number of lights, doesn't appeal to me). And I wish Abrams would stop talking about how silly TOS is. The only thing that's really silly about TOS from today's perspective is the styrofoam rocks and coffee-lid set decorations, but I think we all take it for granted that a present-day big-budget studio film won't have those anyway. So what's so silly? Spock's pointed ears? He's supposed to be a human-alien hybrid, so he has to look unusual somehow. Would Abrams rather Spock have a nose like an anteater's, or orange skin with white polka-dots? The easily-identifiable bar code scanners on the bridge consoles look a lot sillier to me than anything TOS ever had.

But regardless, I'm still willing to see the film and withhold my final judgment until the closing credits.

Are you sure? I thought the hate started with Enterprise :) And besides, JJ is bringing back a hero long since gone-- in some fashion, which is what a lot of Trek fans asked for.

I am too. While there are some differences, a lot is the same... and I am looking forward to this film! So far from what I've seen, it seems as though JJ picked the right actors to play the parts in this movie.
