I don't get all this cautiousness about static, I've built plenty of computers and I handle all sorts of electronic components almost on a daily basis, I've yet to damage anything, and we have a nylon carpet. Just taking the sides off a case and removing an optical drive can't possible do any harm anyway unless your hand slips and you somehow make contact with something that's actually sensitive and give it a huge zap. If you're really paranoid though, just keep your PSU plugged in (and turned off) and just grab the case periodically.
Anyway, sounds like you should just replace the drive if it's making noises to begin with. Forget finding the straw (unless you really need it), and just get another drive. It's a simple replacement even for non-technical people.
