I like Captain Janeway

I think she was an OK captain.

She might have not been a Kirk or Picard but she was OK.

To celebrate Janeway here's a meme I found.

That has got to be the least enthusiastic celebratory thread I have ever seen.

Janeway was actually really cool. And certainly the only Trek captain who'd start a war for a cup of coffee which makes her so much more awesome than the rest.

I like Janeway ....

And hell yes she would go to war for coffee. The whole Delta Quadrant.

Janeway is great plus she is put into insanely difficult situations all the time with no easy answer and no backup. Even Sisko in wartime had the whole of Starfleet to call up. Janeway isn't perfect but that kind of makes me enjoy her more.

Plus Mulgrew is faultless.

But imagine Voyager if Genevieve Bujold had gotten the part. She did audtion for Janeway but I can't imagine anyone other then Mulgrew now.

Yeah I obviously don't know how Bujold would have done, but I can't imagine anyone owning the material and having the presence, voice, subtlety or range needed for Janeway - Mulgrew completely defined the role.

For me, the problem with Janeway was never the core of the character, or Mulgrew's acting. It was (and this is Voyager's biggest flaw as a whole series) the inconsistency of the writing staff. One episode, she's a clearheaded, levelminded leader who has a great balance between heart and mind. The next episode, she's nearly maniacal, nearing borderline. But like I said, inconsistency was a flaw with many characters.

I really like Janeway, and would love to sit down and drink some coffee together and let her entertain me with some great stories. She always came acros a great storyteller to me.

What? Janeway is just an OK Captain?!

She is an awesome woman (kind, smart and generous) & a badass Captain, who is ready to defend tooth and nail her crew and protect other civilizations. Just see the love, respect and trust that devote her crew (Starfleet & the Maquis) towards her

Don't get me wrong, it doesn't mean that she is perfect: she is headstrong, can be bossy & may adopt contradictory attitudes (and unfair towards some people) on occasions but generally, she is a good captain, who does a good work.
She is in the same vein as her male colleagues! :techman:

Your post should have opened the thread. Cheers.

Well after seeing that I definitely prefer Kate Mulgrew.

Janeway was a natural born leader with the ability to have others follow not just because she held rank. She inspired loyalty and dedication and earned her place as Captain by service and sacrifice and smarts. She rarely showed any lack of conviction even when she had her own doubts and personal demons. Would go down with her ship in a heartbeat.

She got them home.. both of her, lol. You can't do better than that.

Another thing I think that I particularly love about Janeway is her closeness with her crew. Sure, Kirk and Picard love their crews and would always protect them - but crewmen come and go, there's a set of senior officers who are special but generally a colleague/boss kind of relationship between captain and the rest of the crew. With Sisko, he's in charge of this whole constantly shifting space station...
But Janway - it's her and her crew against the Delta Quadrant. There's no coming and going (or if there is - e.g. the Borg children - it is a very special circumstance with a personal tinge to it). It's their whole lives and she is in charge of them. When Janeway talks to some bad guy about 'MY CREW', she really means it in a way no other captain can.
She effectively has to stand in for parents, Starfleet, the Federation, for over a hundred people over 7 years! Her responsibilities outweigh any other captain's on their ship.

I agree and that's why I love "The Good Shepard" so much. When she realizes how insulated she's become from the problems of three of Voyager's very junior members, she doesn't just order Chakotay to deal with it, SHE takes the problem on herself.

I forgot to mention in my last post, that what I admired Janeway, for holding on to principles in times of despair and maintaining a vision of humanity in perilous times, such as ''The Void''(season 6).

Had someone else been cast in the role of Janeway, the way the character was written might have been different from how the role was written for Mulgrew.

And of course after the event it can be hard to imagine someone else in that role so our objectivity can be clouded.

I truly think that what makes the sucess of a character is the right balance between how the character was orignally written, the choice of the performer and how he/she decides to play his/her character, often up to bring some personal features after several seasons, when the actor/actress definitively feels more confortable with his/her character.

For ex, to perform someone like Kathryn Janeway, it was necessary to have a natural presence and authority, what Kate Mulgrew had without a doubt, from the
intonation of the voice to the posture. Geneviève Bujold*, as a fine actress she is (and she trully is talented!), was unable to exude (naturally) any form of authority and presence, which was much needed And to be totally convinced, just listen what actors like Wang and McNeil, Russ who shooted 1 or 2 scenes with Bujold and Mulgrew, used to say.

*Bujold was 52 yo when she began to shoot for Voyager while Mulgrew was 40 yo. And then, usually, Starfleet's captains have a strong personality, are physically active. Can you decently imagine, Bujold as Janeway, in actions scenes? Or flirting with her XO, what was Taylor's idea? In both cases,I'd say "no".

Out of interest, what kind of things have the other actors said about Bujold?
I agree, for sure, that it was necessary to have someone with a natural authority to her (I know that the writers/producers were especially keen to have this due to this being the first female captain) - Mulgrew totally embodies that effortless command presence.
