I know a Jean Luc.

Mr. Scott

Howdy!

I am an American living in China and know someone whose name is Jean Luc. He's not French but Italian and has never watched the show. If he went to America he would probably get annoyed by all the people telling him about Star Trek and calling him Captain.

Do you know anyone named Jean Luc? Seems that if it is the Latin form of John Luke, this should be very common, since they are Biblical names.

Never met a Geordi. Probably never will.

No, but I work with a Nechele. Her mother named her after Nichele Nichols, but changed the spelling for some reason.

If he's Italian then it's more likely that he's called Gianluca (or other spelling of the name: Gian Luca, Gian-Luca, etc), than Jean-Luc. Or maybe he's just an Italian guy with a French name (uncommon but it can happen).

It's not the Latin form (which would be Ioannes Lucas), but obviously the French one (with Picard being French and all :p). Regional variations of the name are rather common in some parts of Europe (I know a couple of Gianluca myself), but apparently it never caught popularity in the English-speaking parts of the world.

I did also meet a Kira one time. She's from Canada and saw DS9, and everyone remarked that, which she took in stride.

Did anyone else think of Riker grinning and saying, "I wish I could have known THAT Jean-Luc Picard" when they read the thread title?

Jean-Luc are the French names for John and Luke in English, but it's a common French male first name.

I've never known a Jean-Luc in real life, but if I did it would be uncanny if he also were bald, drank Earl Gray Tea, and loved Shakespeare. and also if he disliked children as well. :p

I had a friend who was of French background named Jean-Pierre, but I insisted on calling him Jean-Luc. Does that count?

Also, I have a dog named Molly, like in Molly O'Brien, another dog named Jake, like Jake Sisko, a cat named Ryker, as in well, you know. For the record, the cat came to us with that name.

My wife put her foot down when I tried to name my children Spock, Uhura, and B'Elanna.
